JOSEPH CONRAD married Jessie George in London on 24 March 1896. There quickly followed event would prove to be a highly productive six-month working honeymoon in Brittany. Conrad left for France with Almayer's Folly (1895) and Outcast of Islands (1896) behind him, and a novel then called Rescuer on stocks; by time he returned he had picked at his novel and had completed Idiots, An Outpost of Progress, Lagoon, and, if Jessie Conrad's memory is correct, two chapters of The Nigger of 'Narcissus (1926: 38). Set in Brittany, Idiots is haunted by its origins.1 Jessie Conrad recollects Much of lie Grande life is in short story ... The stone-cutters are in it, landlady is in it. ... I won't describe idiots. Conrad had done that (1926: 38). This note amplifies hitherto known details of Conrads' He Grande life.The Journey: Waterloo to St-Malo to LannionThe Conrads began their journey to this then-remote corner of Brittany at Waterloo Station, where they boarded a train for Southampton, arriving there two hours later for 13-hour journey to St-Malo (Black 1884: 221). For her part, Jessie Conrad comes up with two slighdy contradictory accounts of her experience of a memory a quarter of a century in past. First, in Joseph Conrad As I Knew Hint, she recounts: (1) they left England on same day as their marriage; and, (2) they travelled overnight: went on board St Malo boat shortly after eleven ... Normally we were due at St. Malo at seven in morning, but it was before we got ashore and went to nearest hotel' (1926: 25-26). Then, gainsaying this, in Joseph Conrad and his Circle, she offers: (1) they spent their first married (that is, 24 March) in the bachelor rooms Joseph Conrad had retained for last in (1935: 19); and, (2) her mother saw them off at Waterloo, on train to Southampton, thus on 25 March; where they went aboard midnight (Ihid. 20, 21). She refers to aboard (25 March) as our second married night (Ihid. 22).The second account is probably more accurate of two. It would place Conrads' arrival in France in mid-afternoon of 26 March, three o'clock referred to in first account and just twelve hours late according to second (1925: 26; 1935: 22). On disembarkation, they passed through formalities, their luggage being inspected at custom-house. Both accounts indicate couple spent a at St-Malo before proceeding to Lannion next day. Staying in St-Malo would have been sensible after their gruelling trip, which, not counting preparations to arrive at Waterloo on time for their train, would have taken, at a minimum, about fifteen hours of travelling.LannionTransported from hotel to station by bus following morning, Conrads travelled to Lannion, on southbound train, changing for branch line at a station south of Dol, and again changing at Plouaret, for last leg of their journey, another 9Y2 miles, to Lannion.According to Conrad, they arrived there at about 3 p.m. in afternoon of 27 March,2 and put up at Hotel de France (see Fig. 2), located on quay of River Guer. The town, which they used as a base whilst house-hunting, is described thus in a guidebook of period:Lannion (Cotes du Nord), Brittany. Population, 6425. A pleasantly situated town on river Guer. Branch line from Plouaret. Streets crooked and steep, and badly built. There are pleasant walks in town and suburbs. The church of ST. JOHN BALY is of 16th and 17th centuries. The mined church of KERMARA AU TRAON is of 12th century. The ancient Ursuline Convent is used as a prison; old chapel has a fine facade on Rue des Capucines. The HOTEL DE VILLE is modern.
