Church Hymnary, 4th edition edited by John L. Bell. Norwich: Canterbury Press, 2005. 825 items+cxvi pp. Full music ed. ISBN 13: 978-1-85311-613-1. U.K. £27.00. Although Church Hymnnry, 4th ed. (hereafter, CH4) was published over two years ago, it was received much more recently for review at The Hymn. It was perhaps the first monumental hymnal publication of the twenty-first century, and I am using that adjective purposefully and literally. The dictionary defines a monument as an outstanding and enduring achievement viewed as a model for later generations. Hymnal committees formed and forming as the next wave of denominational hymnal revision begins, will want to have a copy of CH4 for reference. CH4 is the official hymnal for the Church of Scotland and had a rather long gestation period (1994-2005). John L. Bell, F.H.S., well-known to members of the Society, was convener/chairman of the committee that produced the hymnal and served as music editor. His influence and expertise is evident throughout the hymnal, and I mean that in a most complimentary way. Only a person with Bell's depth and breadth of knowledge of congregational song coupled with his pastoral and theological background could have guided to fruition a hymnal quite like CH4. It is a wonderful compendium of congregational song developments during the last quarter of the twentieth century while at the same time preserving the traditional hymnody and metrical psalmody one would expect to find in the official Church of Scotland hymnal. Apparently, it has been well received as well. According to the publisher's website, it has gone through multiple printings, selling over 160,000 copies since May 2005. A new ecumenical version of CH4 will appear under the title, Hymns of Glory, Songs of Praise, in 2008. The principal criticism leveled against the new hymnal has been its size and weight, and a hefty volume it is, despite the rather transparent paper stock employed. One of the most striking aspects of CH4 is its organization. The committee returned the Psalter to prominence as the first section of the hymnal (Nos. 1-108). The last major section of the hymnal (Nos. 750-805) is labeled Short Songs. The rest of the hymnal is arranged in three large sections based in the Holy Trinity: I. The Living God, II. Life in Christ, and III. The Holy Spirit. Certainly, CH4 is not the first hymnal to be arranged along Trinitarian lines, but the multiple subsections that the committee devised provide excellent organizational hooks. Recognizing that hymns in one section could have been part of another, each of the sections concludes with a convenient list of also suitable selections.
