Notice bibliographique
Résumé
In his Histoire de la Nouvelle France, first published in 1609, Marc Lescarbot, a Catholic lawyer enlisted on the fleet of Sieur de Poutrincourt in a French colonial expedition in North America, undertakes to describe the Nordic reality he discovers. It turns out that the representation of this region integrates in more than one way “the imagination of the North” described Daniel Chartier, found for example in the works of Jean-François Regnard and Pierre-Martin de La Martinière, both of whom are trying to describe, among others, Lapland. However, Marc Lescarbot minimizes the harshness of the climate to portray an Edenic Canada with a pleasant climate and abundant resources. But this transfiguration of the North American reality is not a mere exercise in style: it is part of an advertising strategy that aims to promote the French colonial enterprise to counter the Spanish stranglehold. In addition, the cleavage between the northern and southern populations, in favor of the former, which would be more virtuous, is duplicated in the description of the American populations: the Acadians would be an avatar of the Europeans, while the Brazilians and Floridians, at the South, would be bawdy, according to the belief theorized by Jean Bodin that climates influence temperaments. This appreciation of the northern peoples is contemporary with the French development of the myth of the Gaul - which is associated with the North American Indian - then opposed to the type of the Roman, in the perspective of claiming a French national culture that would be different from the Latin heritage. In this article, we will examine the issues of sublimation, in and through writing, of Acadia, which, from the unfriendly North, is transfigured into an Edenic country. \n
