Abstract Let 𝐺 be a group. A function <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><m:mrow><m:mi>G</m:mi><m:mo stretchy="false">→</m:mo><m:mi>G</m:mi></m:mrow></m:math> G\to G of the form <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><m:mrow><m:mi>x</m:mi><m:mo stretchy="false">↦</m:mo><m:mrow><m:msup><m:mi>x</m:mi><m:mi>α</m:mi></m:msup><m:mo></m:mo><m:mi>g</m:mi></m:mrow></m:mrow></m:math> x\mapsto x^{\alpha}g for a fixed automorphism 𝛼 of 𝐺 and a fixed <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><m:mrow><m:mi>g</m:mi><m:mo>∈</m:mo><m:mi>G</m:mi></m:mrow></m:math> g\in G is called an affine map of 𝐺 . The affine maps of 𝐺 form a group, called the holomorph of 𝐺. In this paper, we study finite groups 𝐺 with an affine map of large order. More precisely, we show that if 𝐺 admits an affine map of order larger than <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><m:mrow><m:mfrac><m:mn>1</m:mn><m:mn>2</m:mn></m:mfrac><m:mo></m:mo><m:mrow><m:mo stretchy="false">|</m:mo><m:mi>G</m:mi><m:mo stretchy="false">|</m:mo></m:mrow></m:mrow></m:math> \frac{1}{2}\lvert G\rvert , then 𝐺 is solvable of derived length at most 3. We also show that, more generally, for each <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><m:mrow><m:mi>ρ</m:mi><m:mo>∈</m:mo><m:mrow><m:mo stretchy="false">(</m:mo><m:mn>0</m:mn><m:mo>,</m:mo><m:mn>1</m:mn><m:mo stretchy="false">]</m:mo></m:mrow></m:mrow></m:math> \rho\in(0,1] , if 𝐺 admits an affine map of order at least <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><m:mrow><m:mi>ρ</m:mi><m:mo></m:mo><m:mrow><m:mo stretchy="false">|</m:mo><m:mi>G</m:mi><m:mo stretchy="false">|</m:mo></m:mrow></m:mrow></m:math> \rho\lvert G\rvert , then the largest solvable normal subgroup of 𝐺 has derived length at most <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><m:mrow><m:mrow><m:mn>4</m:mn><m:mo></m:mo><m:mrow><m:mo stretchy="false">⌊</m:mo><m:mrow><m:msub><m:mi>log</m:mi><m:mn>2</m:mn></m:msub><m:mo></m:mo><m:mrow><m:mo stretchy="false">(</m:mo><m:msup><m:mi>ρ</m:mi><m:mrow><m:mo>−</m:mo><m:mn>1</m:mn></m:mrow></m:msup><m:mo stretchy="false">)</m:mo></m:mrow></m:mrow><m:mo stretchy="false">⌋</m:mo></m:mrow></m:mrow><m:mo>+</m:mo><m:mn>3</m:mn></m:mrow></m:math> 4\lfloor\log_{2}(\rho^{-1})\rfloor+3 .
