Petrography and geochemistry of drill core from the Taylors Brook property in the Stirling belt, southeastern Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The Stirling belt in southeastern Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, is one of several belts of Precambrian rocks in the Avalonian Mira terrane of the northern Appalachian orogen. It consists of ca. 680 Ma volcaniclastic rocks, flows, porphyries, breccias, and clastic sedimentary rocks (Stirling Group), intruded by ca. 620 Ma dioritic to granitic plutons and overlain by Cambrian sedimentary rocks. It is in faulted contact at the L'Archeveque Fault with younger rocks of the Fourchu Group of the Coastal belt and the Devonian Lower St. Esprit Pluton. Based on the previously mined deposit at Stirling as well as numerous other sulphide occurrences, the Stirling belt has high potential for economic sulphide mineralization but outcrop is limited and hence the geology and tectonic setting are not well understood. This study of the petrography and geochemistry of drill core from the Taylors Brook area contributes to a better understanding of the rock units, geochemistry, mineralization, and tectonic setting of the Stirling belt. The rocks of the Taylors Brook area include basalt, quartz-feldspar porphyry, rhyolite, varied mafic and felsic tuff, cherty ash tuff, pyritic siltstone, mafic and porphyritic mafic dykes, younger quartz arenite, and the Lower St. Esprit Granite. The L'Archeveque Fault occurs at the contact between the rocks of the Stirling Group and the Lower St. Esprit Granite and separates the Stirling and Coastal belts. The volcanic rocks in the Taylors Brook area are calc-alkalic and formed in a volcanic-arc tectonic setting and the sedimentary rocks were deposited in an intra-arc basin. The mineralization that occurs in the Taylors Brook area is predominantly pyrite with minor chalcopyrite and sphalerite and forms semi-massive sulphide lenses at the contacts of quartz-feldspar porphyry units, as well as disseminated sulphides in siltstone.
