he present academic year has been particularly notable in the field of cardiovascular surgery.Landmark research developments were revealed, from new survival data on the use of radial artery coronary bypass grafts to the results of the ISCHEMIA trial (International Study of Comparative Health Effectiveness With Medical and Invasive Approaches), which warrant careful interpretation.With this in mind, the 2020 Cardiovascular Surgery-Themed Issue of Circulation gathers key articles pertaining to the forefront of our field, with generated interest foreseen to extend to the entire cardiovascular community.Transcatheter aortic valve replacement and surgical valve repair are featured in 3 articles, including a randomized controlled trial of mitral leaflet resection versus chordal augmentation, and a report of new translational findings in valve-sparing aortic root replacement, as well.In coronary artery surgery, this year's Themed Issue includes reports on long-term patency with the radial artery, new information on the late effects of postoperative atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass grafting, and long-term outcomes with revascularization for radiation-associated coronary artery disease.Two leaders in the field thoughtfully caution about the expanding role of fractional flow reserve in informing indications for coronary artery bypass and grafting strategy.Also included in this Themed Issue is an important basic science paper that provides new insights on the pathogenesis of aortic aneurysms.In congenital heart surgery, a comprehensive report of national outcomes and recent progress with hypoplastic left heart syndrome are featured.Our State of the Art article focuses this year on the ambitious topic of cardiac xenotransplantation.We hope that the 2020 Cardiovascular Surgery Themed Issue will garner wide interest.As in previous years, our goal remains to help drive innovation and beneficial practice changes in cardiovascular surgery through impactful research dissemination, an important part of Circulation's role as the premier cardiovascular journal.We thank the authors who have provided numerous high-quality submissions, the staff and leadership at Circulation for their unwavering support, and, most important, you the reader for your interest in the present compendium of carefully selected articles.
