Sergei Bogatyrev (University College London) edited the volume, which includes excellent, well-researched contributions by Korpela, Bogatyrev, Ouzel Ibneyeva (Kazan State University), Arto Luukkanen (University of Helsinki), Pekka Kauppala (University of Helsinki), and Hanna Smith (University of Helsinki). By focusing on relations between the centre and the regions of Russia and concentrating on the process of integration, these scholars have significantly advanced our understanding of how modern Russia took shape.In Saints and the Integration of Muscovy, Jukka Korpela examines how the Russian Orthodox Church used external threats, the canonization of regional holy figures, cults of saints and saintly rulers, and the idea of a powerful Orthodox Christian state to promote the ascendancy of and the unification of Russia. Korpela notes the similarity of these strategies to those employed by the Catholic Church but points out that the Russian Orthodox Church played a larger role as a unifying force (and for much longer) than did its counterpart in the West. The Russian Church not only helped legitimize the rising power of and its rulers but also provided ideological justification for the emerging Russian empire. Russia's pseudo-religious vision of itself managed to survive the Communist era and continues to act as a powerful integrating force in Russian society at the dawn of the twenty first century.In Localism and Integration in Muscovy Sergei Bogatyrev analyzes centre-periphery relations during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries by focusing on the role played by local administrators in the complex process of integrating diverse regions into the new Russian state. Sustained intervention (administrative, financial, economic, legal, cultural, and ideological) by the centre during the unification of Russia and the formation of the Russian empire caused profound changes at the regional level that significantly reshaped local institutions and identity. Bogatyrev's findings undermine traditional scholarship on Russian absolutism and regional history; but, as he correctly points out, they fit nicely into the new model of the fiscal-military state that is currently revolutionizing the comparative study of early modern Europe.Guzel Ibneyeva's Journey of Catherine II to the Baltic Lands in 1764 focuses on Catherine the Great's relatively unknown tour of Russia's Baltic territories early in her reign to gain insight into the development of the empress's approach to the integration of non-Russian regions into the Russian empire. …
