In the final essay of this collection, Cora Voyageur and Dan Beavon declare, 'We are optimistic that Aboriginal people are emerging from the margins of Canadian society' (p. 448). This book represents a vigorous, informed, and lively part of this growing recognition of Aboriginal contributions to Canadian society. Vast in its scope, both historically and topically, this collection makes visible the unrecognised role that Aboriginal people have played in the founding, forming, and continuing development of the Canadian state and Canadian identity. This collection presents both a general orientation to the legal and political landscape of issues surrounding Aboriginal peoples in Canada, and an account of the specific yet immanent contributions of Aboriginal people in areas of art, literature, justice, culture, sports and military. This monograph thus serves as both an acutely tuned general resource on Aboriginal peoples' contributions to Canada and a detailed assembly of the Aboriginal individuals and collectives that have made such important, yet often elided contributions to Canadian society. To draw two contrasting examples from the text, firstly Drew Hayden Taylor in the essay 'Laughing Till Your Face is Red' tells of her own experiences as an Aboriginal playwright among 'colour-denied' (p. 208) theatre audiences. This entertaining discussion humorously explores how Native humour has had a difficult reception in non-Native populations, as 'pigment challenged' audiences have had to learn to react to humour that often has the history of Aboriginal oppression as a referent. This essay also, however, gives a hopeful picture as greater Aboriginal contributions to literature have begun to garner more understanding of the often biting and poignant humour in the works of Aboriginal writers. In his essay, Russel Barsh, exploring the political and ethical significance of Aboriginal peoples, contends that Aboriginal peoples have 'created a dialectic about justice in Canadian society' (p. 287), and as such have tempered how the Canadian state faces all of the challenges it faces, such as immigration and globalisation. While an essay collection with the vast scope and diversity of this book, at first glance, could be seen merely as a loosely sewn together patchwork of disparate topics, there are some remarkably strong themes that are probed throughout the very different topical treatments. …
