This book has a most unfortunate and misleading title. It is not about Doukhobors per se, but documents only the actions of a radical Doukhobor subgroup known as the Sons of Freedom. Mainline or orthodox Doukhobors will be chagrined by yet another attempt to malign their faith by this misrepresentation. Cran's attempt to gain a reading audience by sensationalizing the book's title is regrettable and falls into the category of negatively slanted literature about Doukhobors long ago penned by Hazel O'Neail in 1962 (Doukhobor Daze), and Simma Holt in 1964 (Terror in the Name of God: The Story of the Sons of Freedom). Despite this serious gaff, the book does have some redeeming qualities. Cran is correct that the book fills a gap in the history of the Sons of Freedom, and he does present a reasonable analysis of prevailing assumptions about conflict resolution. His observations on page 6 that Doukhobors were granted military exemption just as immigrating Mennonites were in 1874 needs elaboration. In fact, the Canadian government later abolished military exemption for Mennonites by a secret Order-in-Council which influenced five thousand Old Colony Mennonites to migrate to Mexico in 1922. Negotiating Buck Naked contains eight chapters beginning with a brief, general history of the Doukhobor movement (chapter 1), followed by an explication of conflict theory (chapter 2). Chapters 3 through 7 offer information gleaned from interviews with Doukohobor participants and an examination of proceedings involving government negotiations with the Sons of Freedom in an effort to stop violence in their communities. Unlike the tone of Doukhobor historian Koozma Tarasoff's writings, the government comes off quite well in Cran's work, particularly when he describes in a matter-of-fact style government action in regard to confiscation of Doukhobor lands in 1938. In fact, foreclosure on the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood (CCUB) was not at all necessary; the debt load of the organization represented only a fraction of their total wealth, and the government was not an innocent bystander in the foreclosure process. Both the British Columbia and the federal governments cooperated with the Sun Life Assurance Company and National Trust to bring about the bankruptcy of the CCUB. Cran's rendition makes the government appear as a neutral participant. Another point of concern is Cran's statement that [a]ll [Reformed Doukhobors] were resentful of Orthodox leadership, whom [sic] they believed were responsible for disrupting their lives (18). …
