Molecular Characterization of the Fate and Kinetics of Oil San Process-Affected Water (OSPW) Naphthenic Acid Fraction Compounds (NAFCs) in Constructed Wetland Treatment System
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The mining of bitumen generates oil sands process-affected water (OSPW). The OSPW contains Naphthenic acid fraction compounds (NAFCs) among its organic acid constituents as the primary toxicant. Because of concerns of its environmental footprint, OSPW is held in tailing ponds under environmental regulation that holds oil sand operators to a zero discharge of OSPW. Management of OSPW requires that the treated water is returned to the aquatic environment as a means of enhancing the industry’s water sustainability. Methods are being considered for the analysis and treatment of OSPW to guarantee their safe return to the environment. In this study, the treatment of OSPW was investigated using pilot-scale constructed wetland treatment systems (CWTSs). This work involved the development of a solid phase extraction (SPE) procedure for better insights on the fate of OSPW-NAFCs in CWTSs. A weak anion exchange (WAX) SPE) method was developed and benchmarked against the Isolute ENV+ SPE method to apply the better process for sample clean-up. The results after the analysis of OSPW samples showed higher enhancement of classical NAs for the WAX SPE method compared to the Isolute ENV+ SPE method. The degradation of OSPW-NAFCs in CWTSs was assessed using the WAX SPE method and high-resolution Orbitrap-MS. The results showed that the extent and rate of degradation of OSPW-NAFCs were influenced by CWTS design and operational conditions. Bioassays using fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), freshwater invertebrate species (Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia magna), and marine bacteria (Vibrio fischeri (Microtox assay)) were used for toxicity evaluation. They revealed the effectiveness of the CWTSs to remove OSPW toxicity. The study presents the importance of the application of different ionization techniques for a more comprehensive understanding of the fate of OSPW-NAFCs in CWTSs. Moreover, the assessment of the degradation and detoxification of OSPW-NAFCs in treatment wetlands using the new WAX SPE method is an important step forward in the establishment of appropriate standard techniques for the analysis of OSPW-NAFCs.
