Peter Petro, ed. Critical Essays on Kundera. Critical Essays on World Literature. New York: G. K. Hall & Co, 1999. xi, 293 pp. Selected Bibliography. Index. $49.00, cloth. A of reviews, interviews, open letters, articles and essays that focus on the Czech emigre writer Kundera, this volume was released by the series Critical Essays on World Literature, edited by Robert Lecker. After a short Introduction by Peter Petro, there follow four main sections: Reviews, Interviews, Open Letters, and Articles and Essays. latter is the largest, containing 13 articles. Although the volume's Selected Bibliography is rather brief (only one page), it contains the comprehensive works of Aji, Banerjee, and Misurella. Aji's and the Art of Fiction is the most recent critical work on the list (1992). volume ends with a short alphabetical Index of names and terms, which contains references to writers, musicians, philosophers and political figures mentioned by (e.g., Broch, Cervantes, Gombrowicz, Janacek, Kafka, Heidegger, Musil, and Nietzsche), and to recurring themes in his works (e.g., Europe, eroticism, kitsch, the Prague Spring, and totalitarianism). There are also short references to Barthes and Sartre as these appear in the articles about and interviews with Kundera. These are primarily used as a contrast to Kundera's specific concept of the novel (Sartre) and the explicit role of the author in his work (Barthes). This section also contains references of critics to the few instances in which explicitly speaks about Nietzsche (The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1984) and Testaments Betrayed: an Essay in Nine Parts [1995]). Two brief biographical entries by the editor and the general editor of the series complete the volume. For the most part, the volume is a of previously published material. As the editor explains: ... many scholars and critics felt that... reviews, interviews, and specially commissioned essays by noted specialists in Czech literature should be collected in order to further elucidate both Kundera's past works... and those that were published after the appearance of the Aji collection (p. 2). We learn from Petro's Introduction that this is a remake of Aji's. section Articles and Essays contains only four new pieces; they are by Marjorie Rhine, Marketa Goetz-Stankiewicz, Karen von Kunes, and Maria Banerjee. first two focus on Kundera's recent novel Slowness (1996), the others on Testaments Betrayed and Unbearable Lightness of Being. All the articles deal with Kundera's works written after his first novel, Joke (1967). contributions to this section are ordered more or less so as to discuss his works chronologically. first three focus on Joke and the last two on Slowness. There is a general emphasis on the former and on Unbearable Lightness of Being. There is no discussion of Kundera's most recent novel, Identity (1998). section opens with Jungmann's Kunderian Paradoxes (1992), which focuses on the writer's early literary past in former Czechoslovakia, but does not treat his works (poetry, plays and theory) explicitly. This is a short and critical piece that denounces Kundera's conscious creation of a literary persona, especially in the West. Equally critical is Kimball's The Ambiguities of Kundera (1986), which takes to task for refusing to assume a clear political stand and to admit a fundamental difference between the East and the West. Kimball believes that concepts such as kitsch allow [Kundera] to maintain a pose of critical distance without the inconvenience of having to make the hard choices that genuine criticism involves (p. 207). third article to focus on Kundera's political importance is Matejka's Milan Kundera's Europe (1990), which considers in a factual way the Czech novelist's role in the debate on Central Europe. …
