In memoriam: Professor Adetokunbo Oluwole Lucas, OFR, MD, DSc, FRCPH, FFPH, FRCOG, FUI (1931–2020)

The Council of the International Epidemiological Association (IEA) mourns the passing of a towering luminary of public health and epidemiology, Professor Adetokunbo Oluwole Lucas, OFR, MD, DSc, FRCPH, FFPH, FRCOG, FUI. He was a retired Professor of Preventive and Social Medicine, University of Ibadan and Professor of International Health, Harvard University. Professor Lucas was a distinguished medical scientist whose career spanned decades in academia and international public health. His work produced ground-breaking contributions in the epidemiology and control of tropical diseases, including schistosomiasis, malaria and onchocerciasis. He served as President of the IEA from 1971 to 1974 and was appointed foundation Director of the World Health Organization Tropical Diseases Research programme in 1976. During 10 years at the helm of this programme, he led a major effort in building capacity to control several major tropical diseases. Professor Lucas campaigned ceaselessly to improve health and reduce maternal mortality in Africa. He used his immense clout to champion a consultative approach with African communities and leaders in designing and instituting public-health programmes. He was a mentor to generations of researchers and public-health practitioners who have since had successful careers. His ‘Guidelines for developing Africa’s response to the crisis in human resources for health’, published in the BMJ in 2005,1 are as relevant today as they were then. Despite some progress in African public health, they are likely to remain pertinent for the foreseeable future. Training health personnel and sharing experiences, during a lifetime devoted to improving health for all in Africa, were the foundation of his well-informed advice. His partnership with Professor Herbert Gilles produced one of the foremost public-health texts. A Short Textbook of Preventive Medicine for the Tropics,2 first published in 1973, is in its fifth edition. Until his passing, Professor Lucas was tireless in his passion for teaching, influencing and motivating his students and mentees to greater exploits. His work ethic and incisive thinking were second to none; his wisdom, charisma and benevolence will be sorely missed. The Council extends its condolences and those of the entire IEA community to his family, friends, colleagues and universities. His footprints in the sands of epidemiology and public-health practice are surely indelible and will remain a source of celebration for decades. None declared.
