Résumé
This article aims to study Hagar Currie Shipley in The Stone Angel which is the first of Margaret Laurence`s compelling series of novels set in Manawaka, the fictional Scots-Irish community that Laurence created based on her childhood home of Neepawa, Manitoba. It is the story of Hagar Currie Shipley who is a character that deserves a special place in modern literature. She symbolizes a stone angel who is so unique and without parallel, mainly because the character is a very difficult woman to like. The daughter of a successful Scottish merchant, Hagar chooses to marry the man whom her father is most likely to disapprove. Her father is hard and unforgiving. He dies without seeing his daughter again and without meeting her sons― his grandsons, Hagar who has many of her father`s traits, also lives her life joylessly, not sharing her inner self or gentleness with her husband or her two sons. We find her late in life the picture of a crotchety old lady, being cared for by her eldest son whom she least loved. As an old woman, Hagar is critical and sharp-tongued and unrelenting. She has lived a life that is utterly devoid of joy and warmth and love. All of these characteristics of Hagar`s can be explained understanding she is a patriarch in a petticoat, with a man`s mind in a woman`s body, the embodiment of a stone angel. These traits are from her father, which causes her excessive pride and stubbornness; which causes her failed relationships and lack of love. Therefore, cantankerous, cranky and often befuddled at the age of 90, Hagar isn`t ready to give up her independence and go into a nursing home, However, she is trapped in a body that is betraying her bit by bit and a mind that overwhelms her with passionate, painful memories. And she finally realizes true love through her weakening body and experiences the rebirth of soul through the ending death of her body. It can be explained that she transforms from a Stone Angel into Pygmalion`s Galatea in her soul, which gives her a real salvation. Through Hagar, Laurence gives us the message that we should live as a true human or a true woman that plays a true role according to its destiny. But Hagar`s feisty resilience makes her one of the most remarkable and appealing characters in Canadian literature although Hagar might be an irascible, vicious, and even vulgar old woman.
