We present a historical review of penile piercings and the origin of the Prince Albert piercing. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was performed of various manuscripts regarding genital piercings and Prince Albert using databases such as PubMed, archive.org, and Google Scholar. RESULTS: The art of genital piercing has been documented as early as the first century AD by Vatsyayana in the Kama Sutra. The traditional Sanskrit writing describes piercing of the “lingam”, or phallus, for sexual pleasure and arousal. The Dayaks, an indigenous tribe from Borneo have also been known to pierce the glans using shards of bone. Female members of the tribe are able to request the men undergo apadravya (vertical piercing) and ampallang (horizontal piercing) and have the right to seek separation if the men refuse.Of the various types of genital piercings, the Prince Albert is the most recognized. Albert Francis Charles Augustus Emmanuel was born in 1819 in Bavaria. He became Prince when he married his first cousin, Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, in 1840. He acted as the queen’s advisor and private secretary and had a significant influence on her reign. In 1857 he was given the title “prince consort” for his contributions.The most popular story of how the Prince Albert attained its name involves tight fitting trousers, which were fashionable during that era. Prince Albert was reported to have the penile piercing in order to hang his penis to one side of his trousers as this was more aesthetically pleasing. He was reported to have had the piercing performed in his early 20’s, prior to his marriage. Prince Albert died of typhoid at the age of 42. Queen Victoria famously wore black for the rest of her life to commemorate his death. They had nine children and 42 grandchildren. CONCLUSIONS: The Prince Albert is one of the most renowned penile piercings and is reported to increase sexual pleasure by providing intense urethral stimulation during sexual intercourse.
