Résumé
This thesis explores how modular design and \nprefabricated construction methods can sustainably \nalleviate the affordable housing crisis in Dartmouth, \nNova Scotia. In particular, how the efficiencies \nof these methodologies can be translated into a \nless expensive dwelling for the owner, taking into \nconsideration the entire lifecycle of the building. \nThe proposal is effectively divided into two parts. \nThe first portion focuses on research, outreach, and \npartnerships. Part two uses the findings to set the \nparameters for a holistic design of a dwelling unit that is \nversatile enough to be successful in a variety of contexts. \nThe area of Dartmouth affectionately known as \nBetween the Bridges is used as a case study for a \nhousing intervention. This somewhat marginalized \ncommunity of roughly 13,000 is a well established \nresidential neighbourhood that has access to \namenities and transit routes, and is ripe for the \naddition of minimally disruptive hidden density. \nWith an average household income that is half of the \nrest of Halifax, the thesis proposes that if a model \nproves to be successful here, it could theoretically \nbe implemented and replicated in other housing \nmarkets all over the country. In essence, the site is \nconsidered an epicentre instead of a one-off proposal. \nIt is argued that a multi-pronged approach is \nnecessary, and that no single non-profit, institution, \nor private developer can relieve the stresses that \npeople are feeling in the face of homelessness. \nFor that reason, this proposal sets out to develop a \nunit that can be implemented through a variety of \norganizations, in a multitude of contexts and scales, \nand serves diverse and dynamic demographics. \nThrough strategic partnerships with non-profits, \nvarious organizations, social enterprises, and \nreligious institutions, the aim is to secure funding \nand identify potential personnel who could \nbenefit from the architectural proposal. The thesis \nprocess acts as the “front end design” required to \ndevelop a successful prefabricated housing unit.
