As I write this review, coalition forces have just completed day ten of the new war in the Persian Gulf; an atypical pneumonia is terrorizing people across the continent; and the memories of September 11 are still with us. I cannot think of a better way for the Primate's Theological Commission to proceed in their publishing series than with their newest edition: Turning to God: Anglicans Talk about Sin, and the Christian Life. Like its predecessor, this book is roughly divided into three sections: the introduction; three chapters entitled Sin and Grace, Nourished by Grace, and How Then Should We Live?; and a section with suggestions for use of the book, a bibliography, and a short biography of the contributors. While the first book in this series dealt with God's revelation to us, the second book focuses on our response to God in light of God's continued revelation and love. It allows for discussion about the human condition, the Christian life, individual and communal conversion, and the role of the church. This book is very similar in structure to the first (with some deviations which I will discuss below), and it will be easy for groups or individuals to pick up and follow on in the series. What is most impressive about this volume is that it does not fall into the trap of dwelling upon the subject of sin ad nauseum. The temptation might have been to spend an inordinate amount of dealing with the issue of sin, suffering, and evil. Instead only a very small section, compiled of three short essays, is devoted to this in the book. Perhaps the editors realized that we were well enough aware of the presence of sin and evil in the world, and only needed some examples of a structured way to discuss it; or perhaps, as I once heard in a fine sermon, there is a reality that is often forgotten, and it is that humans have a finite ability to sin, but God has an infinite ability for grace, and we need to acknowledge the balance. Either way, the editors made the decision to both spend more on grace and our response to grace, and also to reflect upon the essence of the church and its sacraments as a vehicle for this grace. This is what gives this volume a distinctive flavor. While book 1 simply lays a series of essays and asks the reader to discuss the topics-to do theology-this volume takes the to lay a series of teachings-a kind of didactic time-out. And this is not the only in the book that a time out seems to occur. In the third group of essays in the book we find Contextual Theology, a discussion which invites us to enter into an exercise concerning financial stewardship, a dialogue about residential schools, and a discussion about the Saskatchewan farm crisis. …
