S514 Using Theory of Planned Behaviour to Understand Factors Influencing Irritable Bowel Syndrome Patients’ Intention to Practice Yoga
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Introduction: Yoga is effective, safe, and targets multiple mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). More research is needed to determine patients’ acceptance of yoga as a therapy and how to best implement and deliver it in clinical practice. Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) constructs, this study aimed to identify patients’ attitude (instrumental and affective), subjective norms (injunctive and descriptive), perceived behavioural control (self-efficacy and controllability), and intention to practice yoga and explore perceived facilitators and barriers, and preferences on delivery modality (face-to-face or virtual). Methods: Adults diagnosed with IBS (N=109) were recruited from gastroenterology clinics and the IMAGINE cohort study, the study website and social media. Participants completed an online survey developed using validated measurement tools based on the TPB. Pearson’s product correlations examined the bivariate associations between intention to do yoga and TPB constructs. Multiple linear regression analysis determined the multivariate associations between TPB variables and intention to do yoga while controlling for socio-demographic variables. Results: Participant characteristics are presented in Table. Most participants (76.1%) would prefer to do yoga at home using online resources. The most common perceived advantages of doing yoga were relaxation, flexibility, and strength, while disadvantages were lacking time, lacking self-discipline, and cost. Barriers included lack of time, cost, and transportation. Facilitative factors were a low cost, instructor-led, group class. All TPB variables except affective attitude, injunctive norm, and self-efficacy were significantly and positively correlated with each other. The TPB predictor variables explained 33.7% of the variance in intention. In multiple linear regression, controllability (β=.51, P< .001), affective attitude (β=.35, P=.043), and self-efficacy (β=.25, P=.044) were significantly associated with the intention to do yoga. All other predictors were not significant. Conclusion: IBS patients would engage in yoga if they were in an instructor-led online group class and had access to a low-cost program with at-home resources. The most common barriers and advantages overlapped with lack of time and cost identified most frequently. Overall, controllability, affective attitude, and self-efficacy were predictive of IBS patients’ intentions to engage in daily yoga practice.Table 1.: Patient characteristics (N=109) Note: *Other includes Chinese, Indigenous, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and South Asian; SD: standard deviation.Table 1.: continued
