These three books share their place of genesis: Prince Edward Island. I have chosen to review them together because each book is a wonderful reminder that the small province is teeming with talent and is far from being stuck in the hackneyed role in which the rest of the world often seems to cast it, that of Spud Island: home of 'Anne', 'Emily', cheap touristy entertainment and the potato. Irene Gammel's collection of essays on the Island's most famous daughter includes chapters by Elizabeth Epperly, Gammel and notably Mary Rubio and Elizabeth Waterston, known to Montgomery fans for their exceptional editing work on Montgomery's journals. Each chapter concentrates on different aspects of Montgomery's personal life: her letter writing, her journal entries, photograph albums and the recollections of friends and family. Outstanding among the excellent contributions are Jennifer Litster's chapter 'The Secret Diary of Maud Montgomery, aged 28¼', in which she examines the lively joint-authored journal that Montgomery and her friend Nora Lefurgey kept for entertainment, and Mary McDonald-Rissannen's chapter 'Veils and Gaps: The Private Worlds of Amy Andrew and L.M. Montgomery, 1910-1914'. In this chapter McDonald- Rissannen examines the spare and practical yet endearing journalistic writings of her own grandmother, herself a PEI native, with reference to Montgomery's work. This is an enjoyable book that has the unusual ability to appeal to nonacademics and academics alike. I would recommend it to students of life writing and journal writing, and to students of Montgomery; I would also recommend it to those who are familiar with Montgomery's work and would simply like to know more about her. Charlottetown's Confederation Centre for the Arts holds regular exhibitions and shows that frequently celebrate some aspect of PEI history or culture. To coincide with these exhibitions the Centre publishes catalogues with the help of funding from Canada Council for Arts and Canadian Heritage. Shauna McCabe's Littoral Documents is one such publication and it is a real treat. …
