Résumé
The Canadian Ethnic Studies Association (CESA) held its seventeenth biennial conference October 2-5, 2003 at the Banff Centre in Banff, Alberta. The theme of the conference, Ethnicity. Space and Place, provided a stimulating framework for analyzing and discussing key issues related to immigration, ethnicity, and cultural diversity in Canada. Five papers from the Banff conference are presented in this special issue. The issue also includes one invited paper related to the conference theme and a special Ethnic Voice piece that is also in keeping with the theme. We tend to take for granted that people, places, behaviour, and events are distributed spatially. These papers illustrate that particular activities tend to be connected to particular spaces and places, and that ethnicity and ethnic and cultural group behaviour is no exception. Further, these papers explore from a variety of perspectives some of the ways in which constructions of place and of ethnic identity are inextricably interrelated, defining and delineating the nature of the spaces various groups occupy and the nature of their interactions across time and space. Ethnic group attachments can form at home, in a neighbourhood, in a city, in a nation, in diaspora. The papers in this issue look at ethnicity in various spaces and places. They range from the classroom, to the city, and to the nation as a whole. The authors of the papers in this issue come from a wide range of disciplines including education, sociology, English, demography, and health. Each brings a unique and interesting perspective to the conference theme. Pigott and Kalbach examine language and ethnicity among university students across Canada, Padolsky explores food, ethnicity, literature, and cross-cultural spaces, and Tirone explores the dynamic nature of mobility between leisure spaces as experienced by a group of young minority Canadians. Dyson looks at the experiences of Chinese immigrant children in elementary school spaces, while Balakrishnan et. al. examine the residential spatial patterns of Filipinos in Canada. Aizelwood and Pendakur examine ethnicity and social capital in Canadian society, and Tran gives life to the voice of a Vietnamese woman on her personal journeys in Vietnam and Canada. CESA is indebted to the Multiculturalism Program in the Department of Canadian Heritage for providing financial support for the conference and for the publication of this special issue.
