George Woodcock, the prolific Canadian author and critic, has declared Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano^ is the finest work of fiction ever written in Canada.2 On this point, Lowry was fond of quot? ing from the Encyclopaedia Britannica for 1948: . . the year [1947] produced no new voice as commanding as of the Canadian, Malcolm Lowry, in Under the Volcano, to presage a major movement among younger writers of He could write to his older brother Stuart Lowry in 1950: I have done more for Canadian literatures than any liv? ing Canadian. . . .3 He added in the same letter, echoing Robert Frost, he and Margerie now consider Canada and [our] fishermen's shack home [which is] the place where, when they have to, they take you in. To his friends, however, Lowry was inclined to anguish over Canada's indifference to him. He complained to an enthusiastic reader of Volcano that the sales in Canada from the end of 1947-49 were pre? cisely 2 copies.4 No plaque marks the site on the beach at Dollarton off Burrard Inlet near Vancouver where Malcolm and Margerie Bonner Lowry had their fishermen's cabin for most of their fourteen years (1940 54) in Canada. No civic recognition was accorded him during his lifetime. Since his death in 1957, Canada has done better by him. Mrs. Lowry was royally received in 1962 when she accepted for her husband the Canadian Governor General's award in fiction for Hear Us O Lord from Heaven Thy Dwelling Place (1961), the best of a spate of posthumous fiction. The University of British Columbia maintains the only important Malcolm Lowry archive in the world. George Woodcock's Canadian Literature did more than any periodical in the world to keep interest in Lowry alive for a decade when not a single edition of Under the Volcano was in print.
