PD Dr. med. habil. Daniel Kretzschmar is head of the Department of Angiology at the University Hospital of Jena. From 1999 to 2006 he studied medicine at the University of Leipzig, Germany; in New York City,USA; Houston, Texas, USA; Toronto, Canada; and Bern, Switzerland. He received his doctorate in 2008 for his research on the influence of transgenic expression of the transcription factor LXR- on atherosclerosis. The fellowship in internal medicine was started in 2007 at the University Hospital of Jena, Germany. After finishing, he achieved the specialization in internal medicine, cardiology, and angiology. His post-doctoral thesis was entitled development, design and evaluation of a percutaneous, pulsatile, right ventricular assist device-PERKAT RV and completed in 2020. His main interest of research focuses on interventional cardiology and angiology. He is member of the German and European society of cardiology and a member of the advisory board of the German society of angiology.Prof. Dr. med. Dr. disc. pol. Markus W. Ferrari is director of the Clinic Internal Medicine 1 of the municipal hospitals Wiesbaden (Helios Dr-Horst-Schmidt-Kliniken) since 2013. From 1986 to 1992, he studied medicine, sports, pedagogic, and social science at Georg-August-University, Goettingen, Germany. The dissertation of his MD-thesis on the “experimental evaluation of a mobile cardio-pulmonary-support system in an animal model” in 1993 was followed by the presentation of his PhD-thesis on the “influence of physical exercise programs on the validity of isokinetic trunk muscle functions” at the Faculty of Social Science and Sports one year later. After his fellowship in internal medicine at the University Hospital Goettingen and Jena, he achieved the specialization in internal medicine and cardiology. Having accomplished a research fellowship at the department of experimental cardiovascular surgery of the Texas Heart Institute, Houston, Texas, USA, in 2001, he received the specialization in internal intensive care medicine in 2003. In the following year, he became associate professor of internal medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University Jena. The dissertation of his post-doctoral thesis was entitled “Development of a trans-vascular aortic valve replacement with a self-expanding stent”. In 2006, he was appointed as Co-Director of the Department of Internal Medicine 1. He was appointed by the Friedrich-Schiller-University to tenured professorship in 2011. Markus Ferrari is author and coauthor of more than 180 publications and currently holds 48 granted patents. His major interest of research focuses on interventional cardiology, heart failure, and structural heart disease. In addition, he is reviewer and member of the editorial board of numerous journals in cardiovascular medicine, and editor of the German edition of Cardiology Up2date.
