Editorial introductions

Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care was launched in 1998. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The fields of clinical nutrition and metabolic care are divided into 15 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Didier AttaixDidier AttaixDr Attaix completed his PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Clermont-Ferrand, France, and postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School, USA. Dr Attaix's career at the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), France, has been devoted to the elucidation of mechanisms involved in the control of muscle mass, in both anabolic and catabolic conditions. For two decades, Dr Attaix has been head of the Proteolysis Group of the Human Nutrition Unit (INRA/Clermont University) with a major focus in ubiquitin-proteasome-dependent and lysosomal protein breakdown. Dr Attaix is also currently head of the MSc program in Human Nutrition and Health at Clermont University, and Deputy Director of the Human Nutrition Research Center (CRNH) Auvergne. The CRNH is proposing innovative nutritional and/or pharmacological strategies for preventing the deleterious effects of age-dependent diseases (cardiovascular or bowel diseases, breast and prostate cancers) or dysfunctions such as sarcopenia. Vickie E. BaracosVickie E. BaracosDr Baracos completed her PhD in Applied Biochemistry and Nutrition at the University of Nottingham, England, and a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Dr Baracos’ subsequent career at the University of Alberta, Canada, spans two decades and has been devoted to studies of the balance of anabolic and catabolic factors in different physiological and pathological states. Most recently the main focus of Dr Baracos’ interest in hypercatabolic states has been malignant disease. Dr Baracos is currently the Alberta Cancer Foundation Chair in Palliative Medicine, and Professor in the Department of Oncology. Dr Baracos is leader of a national research program on cancer and associated cachexia in Canada, and represents nutrition research in the National Cancer Institute of Canada Clinical Trials group. Claude PichardClaude PichardClaude Pichard initially specialized in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He studied the field of Clinical Nutrition with the group of Prof. K.N. Jeejeebhoy (Toronto, Canada) in the early eighties. Returning to Europe, he became Professor in Nutrition and created the Division of Clinical Nutrition at the Geneva University Hospital, Switzerland. Besides his clinical activities, he is currently teaching at the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Sciences and at the School of Dietetics. His group of research is involved in a number of subjects such as modulation by nutrients of colon cancer cell growth; relationships between catabolic diseases (e.g. critical illness, cancer, HIV infection) and nutritional support; manipulations of stress-related catabolism by growth factors; development of body composition techniques such as BIA, DXA, TBK; analysis of ergonomics and economy of clinical nutritional support. He has published over 367 papers (200 are referenced in PubMed), presented 165 abstracts and delivered more than 349 lectures at national and international level meetings. Claude Pichard is active in 24 academic societies inside and outside Europe. He was the Chairman of the European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) until 2006 and recently became the Director of the ESPEN Life-Long Learning educational programme. Berthold V. KoletzkoBerthold V. KoletzkoBerthold Koletzko is Professor of Paediatrics and Head of the Division of Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine at the Hauner Children's Hospital, University of Munich Medical Centre, Munich, Germany. Following work at paediatric departments in South Africa and Tanzania, he qualified in paediatrics at the Children's Hospital, University of Düsseldorf, Germany and completed a fellowship in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism at the Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto, Canada. His research focuses on metabolism and nutrition in childhood, pregnancy and lactation, metabolic diseases, and clinical nutrition. He has co-authored more than 740 publications and received numerous awards and honours, serves as coordinator of Collaborative Research Programmes including the Early Nutrition Programming of Adult Health project (http://www.early-nutrition.org), the Multidisciplinary Early Modification of Obesity Risk Project, and the EU Research Network on Malnutrition and Outcome in Hospitalized Children. Scientific leadership roles include Editor of Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism, Chair of the Committee on Nutrition of the German Society of Paediatrics, Chair of the Child Health Foundation, Scientific advisor to the Forum Early Childhood Advancement of German Federal Family Minister, Managing Council, National Platform on Nutrition and Physical Activity, Chair of the Scientific Board of the Federal Government Network for Young Families, Scientific advisor to the Committee on Environment, Health and Consumer Protection of the European Parliament, Past President of the German Society for Nutritional Medicine and Past Chair of the ESPGHAN Committee on Nutrition. Raanan ShamirRaanan ShamirRaanan Shamir is currently the Chairman of the Institute of Gastroenterology, Nutrition and Liver Diseases at Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel, and is Professor of Pediatrics at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University, Israel. Raanan Shamir received his MD degree from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel, and was trained in Pediatrics at the Beilinson Medical Center, in Petach-Tiqva, Israel. In the early 1990 s he was a fellow at the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, USA and came back to Israel to be the Head of the Department of Nutrition at the Israel Ministry of Health. His current research areas include exploring the effects of oral insulin supplementation on the intestine, pediatric nutrition, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease and childhood hyperlipidemia. Current committee appointments include being the Chairman of the Committee on Nutrition (CoN), European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN), Chairman of the Governmental Supreme Committee on Food, Israel Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Commerce and Environment, Chairman of the Nutrition Committee of the Israel Pediatric Association, Deputy Chair, Upper Gastrointestinal Section, Scientific committee of the UEGF (United European Gastroenterology Federation), and Council member of the Israel Pediatric Association.
