Editorial introductions

Current Opinion in Critical Care was launched in 1995. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of critical care is divided into 13 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the journal's Editor and Section Editors for this issue. EDITOR Jean-Louis VincentJean-Louis VincentProfessor Vincent is a Professor of intensive care medicine at the University of Brussels (Université Libre de Bruxelles) and intensivist in the Department of Intensive Care at Erasme University Hospital in Brussels. He obtained a PhD degree at the University of Brussels. He is a Past-President of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine (WFSICCM), the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM), the European Shock Society (ESS), the Belgian Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SIZ), and the International Sepsis Forum (ISF). He was a Council member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) from 2011–2013. He is a member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine. Prof. Vincent has signed more than 920 original articles, some 400 book chapters and review articles, 1000 original abstracts, and has edited 112 books. He is co-editor of the “Textbook of Critical Care” (Elsevier Saunders) and the “Encyclopedia of Intensive Care Medicine” (Springer). He is the editor-in-chief of Critical Care, Current Opinion in Critical Care, and ICU Management & Practice and member of the editorial boards of about 30 other journals, including Critical Care Medicine (senior editor), the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, PLoS Medicine, Lancet Infectious Diseases, Intensive Care Medicine, Shock, Journal of Critical Care and Annals of Intensive Care. Dr Vincent has received several awards including the College Medalist Award of the American College of Chest Physicians, the Society Medal (lifetime award) of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, the Distinguished Investigator Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the prestigious Belgian scientific award of the FRS-FNRS (Prix Scientifique Joseph Maisin-Sciences biomédicales cliniques), he was awarded the title of Baron by the King of Belgium. His name appears more than 1000 times in Pubmed, and his work has been cited more than 160,000 times; his H-index is 164. SECTION EDITORS Laurent J. BrochardLaurent J. BrochardDr Laurent J. Brochard is the Interdepartmental Division Head of Critical Care Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Canada. He is Full Professor of Medicine at University of Toronto, and is Keenan Chair in Critical Care and Acute Respiratory Failure. He is a Clinician Scientist, Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science, Department of Critical Care at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. He obtained his MD degree from University Paris V in 1986 followed by residency training in Hopitaux de Paris. He did his research fellowship at the National Institute for Scientific and Medical Research (INSERM) (Creteil). He was appointed Vice Dean of the Medical School of Creteil, Paris 12 University in 1995 to 2003. He was the head of the Medical Council, Henri Mondor Hospital Medical ICU in Creteil, France from 2003 – 2010. He became Head of the Intensive Care Unit of Geneva University Hospital, in Switzerland for three years (2010–2013) before coming to Toronto. He has been Editor-in-Chief of the journal Intensive Care Medicine in 2001 – 2007 and is currently Deputy Editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. He has a strong involvement in research, and especially clinical research about mechanical ventilation. He has been at the head of a clinical research network on mechanical ventilation in Europe (REVA) and leads an international collaborative group on applied respiratory physiology (PLUG). He mentored and directed more than 18 PhD students, many of whom are leaders in Critical Care. He published over 500 peer-reviewed publications, including 120 articles over the past 5 years (H-index 90 in Scopus). Tài PhamTài PhamDr Tài Pham, MD, PhD, is currently a post-doctoral fellow in Dr Brochard laboratory at St Michael's hospital, Toronto, Canada. He's completed his training in Anesthesia and Intensive Care in Paris, France, and a clinical Fellowship at St Michael's hospital ICUs, Toronto, Canada. His qualifications include a PhD of Public Health, and several University Degrees in the field of Critical Care. He is a clinical researcher focused on respiratory physiology, mechanical ventilation research and epidemiology. His work during the influenza A(H1N1) pandemics in 2009–2010 compared patients with ARDS treated with ECMO to those receiving traditional mechanical ventilation by means of a propensity score (Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2013). More recently, he aimed at redefining weaning from the mechanical ventilation through a prospective observational study (WIND study, Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2017) He is one of the 4 members of the executive committee of the LUNG SAFE study (JAMA 2016) which is the landmark study on ARDS epidemiology in the era of the Berlin definition. He is a member of executive committee the upcoming WEAN SAFE study, a prospective observational study focusing on weaning from the mechanical ventilation endorsed by the European Society on Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM). This study was recently completed and included more than 12000 patients worldwide.
