This project began as a random exchange among colleagues about the striking commonality of some texts of the German-language late classical, romantic, and the Biedermeier period: "slapstick" seemed to us at that moment the most obvious description for the sometimes comic, sometimes tragic excesses in works by, among others, Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811), E.T.A.
