Résumé
The network was established more than three decades ago, shortly after the Chernobyl accident, as a technical arm of the World Health Organization to provide technical support to the Organization's implementation of its mandate under the International Convention for Assistance in Case of a Nuclear Accident (IAEA, 1987) as well as WHO's Constitution (WHO, 1946) and the relevant resolutions of the World Health Assembly. In 2005, the International Health Regulations (IHR) were revised and came into force in 2007 (WHO, 2016).Since that time, radiological and nuclear emergencies were included in the scope of the IHR (2005) and further leveraged WHO's role and responsibilities pertaining to radiation emergency preparedness and response. In implementing its work, supporting member states' efforts towards implementing the IHR (2005) and meeting its requirements for the national capacities related to radiation emergencies, WHO works closely with its collaborating centres and expert networks such as REMPAN (Carr, 2010).The members of REMPAN implement collaborative activities for building national and regional capacities of the health sector for strengthening the response to radiation emergencies. These capacity building activities include training courses, exercises, development of guides and tools for medical and public health, but also cutting-edge scientific research projects. The network holds triennial meetings serving as an information-sharing platform for the members, where they report on their work, achievements, experiences and review the state-ofthe-art for major topics in the field (Carr et al., 2018).This Special Issue is a compilation of the reports presented at the 16th REMPAN meeting that brought together the world's leading experts in radiation emergency medicine, radiation biology and pathology, radiation epidemiology and dosimetry, public health and communication aspects of managing a radiation emergency. The selected papers for this special issue represent the experience and work of the professionals Further
