Between July and September of 2013, Los Angeles and Long Beach moved more than 2.9 million metric tons of containerized agricultural products, with animal feed accounting for more than 52 percent of the volume. Meat products and soybeans followed at 6 percent each and grocery items, hides and skins, and dairy products represented 4 percent each. During this period, more than 60 percent of these agricultural exports were moved in 40ft containers. Agricultural exporters used ocean carriers Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and OOCL to move 11 percent each of these products, followed by COSCO at 9 percent and APL and Maersk Line at 8 percent each. 1 As the largest container port complex in the country, Los Angeles and Long Beach consistently have the most containers available of any reported OSCAR location. Over the past 3 months, weekly availability estimates have ranged from 14,000 to 20,000 dry containers. Importers and exporters have worked diligently to get cargo into or out of the United States since the beginning of the year in preparation for the fall peak season and to avoid a potential disruption due to the West Coast Longshore Labor contract currently under ongoing negotiation. Import retailers in particular have moved cargo into the United States early, undertaking extra inventory costs, and used alternative port regions (Canadian and East Coast ports) to avoid potential disruption on the West Coast, and have transitioned some cargo to air transportation despite the higher cost over ocean transportation. Over the past several weeks, container availability estimates for dry containers in Los Angeles/Long Beach have been relatively flat with some peaks and valleys, particularly for 40ft highcube containers. Estimates for 40ft high-cube containers have been on an upward trend over the past 3 weeks, even reaching a record level last week at more than 13,000 units. Carriers are anticipating estimates to increase over the next 2 weeks for each of the dry container types, particularly 40ft high-cube containers.
