FOSTERING EMPLOYEES' OCBES IN THE INDIAN HOTEL SECTOR - THE ROLE OF GREEN ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATE AND EMPLOYEES' ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT

ABSTRACT Being highly dependent on water and energy resources, the hotel industry has negative environmental impact, making it imperative for every hotel to become environmentally responsible to reduce its carbon footprint. Organization citizenship behaviors for the environment (OCBEs) of employees can play a significant role in the successful implementation of eco-friendly practices in the hotel industry. This study explores employees’ OCBEs in the Indian hotel industry by proposing a theoretical model that hypothesizes the relationship between green organizational climate, employees’ environmental commitment and employees’ OCBEs. The study proves the positive relationship between green organizational climate and employees’ environmental commitment from the survey among 285 employees across four premium eco-friendly hotels in India. The finding also suggests the positive influence of employees’ environmental commitment on their OCBEs. It also reveals that employees’ environmental commitment partially mediates the relationship between green organizational climate and OCBEs. This study explicates certain factors underlying employees’ OCBEs and develop implications for the hotel management which would enable them to improve their hotels’ environmentally sustainable practices.
