Résumé
Ole, Ole, Marco.... In Issue 4 of Indoor Air, this year, we had a photo showing new, young, scientists in our area... Since Healthy Building 2006 in Lisboa, three giants in our field have passed away: Marco Maroni in June, Ole Valbjörn, and Ole Fanger in September. For elderly readers these names are well known. For a new generation they may possibly be only ‘names’. I have known Ole V and Ole F for more than 35 years, and Marco for almost 20 years. I met Ole V first around 1970 in the Nordic Ventilation Group. They were an unbelievable group of scientists and persons from the authorities that discussed the science within our area, and for example elaborated on standards for measurements of ventilation, and how to examine a ‘suspected Sick Building’. I guess this was the first forum to discuss such topics as ‘ventilation efficiency’ (based on Mats Sandberg's, Anders Svenson's and Eimund Skåret's thinking). Ole Valbjörn was very much involved in all of this, and in developing the NVG guideline for examining ‘Sick Buildings’. The questionnaire used for this purpose (later known as the Örebro-questionnaire) was to a large extent based on the questionnaire used in the first really important study on SBS in offices (with Ole V, Peder Skov, and Finn Gyntelberg as leading names, but with Ole Fanger also included). This questionnaire is today used in numerous studies all over the world. Ole V was an unusually social human being, besides being a great painter and musician (tenor saxophone). Ole F needs no introduction. He is by far the most well known scientist in our field. He has more honorary doctorates and prizes than any in the field of Indoor Air. He is the most well known person within IAQ sciences and within HVAC engineering. In his doctoral thesis he presented results that are today used in many standards regarding thermal comfort all over the world. Later on he presented OLF and decipol, new concepts regarding air quality, concepts that have been at the focus of scientific debate for almost two centuries. During his last years he became more and more concerned with the health effects of indoor air, mainly allergies. Soon after his death, I learned that he had been suffering from severe asthma! I met him around 1974 and we worked together in numerous committees (with him as the scientist and me as the authority, (I was working at the Swedish Authority for building codes, at the time). When I entered science, he soon hired me; apart from that we seldom had the same ideas and we often disagreed! I guess he, as I, enjoyed these discussions and that which we learned from each other! Late in 1977 Ole F called me and asked me to chair an IAQ session at an upcoming international conference, Indoor Climate, in Copenhagen (at WHO) 1978. It was the beginning of the series of Indoor Air Conferences (Amherst, Stockholm, Berlin, Toronto, Helsinki, Japan, Edinburgh, Beijing, Lyngby…). The main organizers were Ole F and Ole V (together with Ib Andersen)! Marco M came into the IA world later, from occupational medicine. His contributions to science have mainly been within other areas, than the main core of IAQ. However, in a very crucial situation, he saved ISIAQ and our journal! In the mid 90s, because of earlier mismanagement, we were close to bankruptcy, but Marco fixed it. Then he organized Healthy Building 1995 in Milan. These three people have been main players in the creation of ISIAQ, IAIAS and our journal, Indoor Air. They are all founders. They were all, dear friends and collaborators since long. I miss them deeply. The group on the photo, in issue 4, 2006, is becoming more and more important!
