STEP is based on CSOR, CDOR and RF for the time corresponding to SOR = 4.STEP was found to be a useful quantitative economic criterion, with a value of 1 for an economic case (CSOR of 3, CDOR of 0.111 m[3]/d/m of horizontal well length and RF of 0.5).To validate this new economic indicator, STEP was calculated based on data from two published studies in which SAGD related simulations were performed. The first study, which provides no economic parameters, shows that most of the optimal cases always have the highest STEP values. The second study, which provides economic parameters (ROR and NPV), shows a good linear relationship between ROR and STEP. STEP is greater than 2 in the case of the economic SAGD scenarios.This study has validated the usefulness of STEP as an economic indicator.STEP can be used as a financial metric quantitatively as well as qualitatively for this type of thermal project.IntroductionThe economics of a SAGD project are related to several production performance parameters. The most significant of those are steam-oil ratio (SOR), calendar day oil rate (CDOR), ultimate recovery (recovery factor, RF), and project life.Simulation studies of the SAGD process have tested the conditions to achieve the lowest cumulative steam-oil ratio (CSOR), highest RF and highest CDOR in order to obtain optimal operating conditions.In a previous study (1), a new simple economic parameter, was introduced to optimize SAGD operating conditions for Athabasca, Cold Lake, and Peace River type reservoirs in the Alberta oil sands. Four operating conditions were optimized for the SAGD process.In this study, this economic indicator, STEP (simple thermal efficiency parameter), was modified to evaluate the performance of a SAGD project under optimized operating conditions and selected reservoir parameters.STEP has been used to evaluate the SAGD performance as a quantitative as well as a qualitative economic indicator.For validating this new economic indicator, STEP calculations have been conducted with the data from two published studies (2, 3) in which SAGD related simulations were performed. The first example (2) provides no economic parameters, whereas the second one (3) provides economic parameters (ROR and NPV). In addition, STEP was used for optimizing the SAGD performance in the three typical Alberta oil sands reservoirs.STEP as a quantitative economic criterionThe SAGD simulations described in this study have been optimized to have the lowest CSOR, highest RF and highest CDOR, which results in the optimal operating conditions.However, there are cases which have low CSOR and low RF or CDOR. In such cases, it is difficult to optimize operating conditions without an economic parameter such as NPV or ROR.STEP was initially introduced to evaluate the performance of a SAGD project under optimized conditions.
