Résumé
Volume 34, Issue 6, Pages XX-XX (Jul/Aug 2011) Helping the Underserved Vindigni et al (p. 381) evaluated a project at the Hands on Philippines Education (Project HOPE) clinic in Bagong Barrio, Caloocan, Philippines. They found that participants who visited the Filipino squatter community clinic experience a high prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions and that massage therapy was helpful in reducing self-reported levels of pain and limitation to activities of daily living. Does Work Injury Predict Neck Pain? Nolet et al (p. 348) investigated the association between a lifetime history of a work-related neck injury and the development of troublesome neck pain in the general population. They found that a lifetime history of work-related neck injury is associated with an increased risk of troublesome neck pain and that occupational neck injuries can lead to recurrent episodes of neck pain. Measuring Postural Asymmetry Ferreira et al (p. 371) quantitatively assessed the postural alignment of several body segments through anterior, posterior, and lateral views. They found no symmetry in postural alignment, which suggests that small asymmetries represent the normative standard for posture in standing. Chiropractic Care of Postsurgical Spine Kruse and Cambron (p. 408) performed a retrospective chart review to report on the results of chiropractic management of patients with postsurgical lumbar spine pain to determine the change in reported pain based on surgical type. They found that no adverse events were reported for any of these postsurgical patients and that there was improvement for patients with postsurgical low back pain who were managed with chiropractic care. Wellness Strategies Stainsby et al (p. 388) investigated if Canadian doctors of chiropractic consider using wellness strategies after functional recovery in acute and chronic conditions using mock clinical cases. All chiropractic doctors in this study reported a number of strategies to educate patients regarding wellness after functional recovery of a complaint. Knowledge of Health and Wellness Leach et al (p. 394) evaluated the familiarity with and stated advocacy of Healthy People 2010 objectives. The objectives focused on 10 leading indicators of health that could readily be applied in chiropractic practice: physical activity, overweight and obesity, tobacco use, substance abuse, responsible sexual behavior, mental health, injury and violence, environmental quality, immunization, and access to health care. They found that a majority of the doctors consider themselves wellness-oriented health care providers and that the majority report that they incorporate these public health goals into their practices. Risk of Back Pain for Doctors Mohseni-Bandpei et al (p. 362) investigated the prevalence and risk factors of low back pain in surgeons and analyzed how individual and occupational characteristics contribute to the risk of back pain. Age, body mass index, smoking, general health, having an assistant, job satisfaction, using preventive strategies, and years of practice were correlated with back pain. Prolonged standing, repeated movements, and awkward postures were the most prevalent aggravating factors. Back Pain and Health Care Smith (p. 356) investigated the extent to which individuals with back pain or other health conditions and individuals with no health problems report having a usual source of care for their health care needs. She found that relatively healthy adults without back pain are less likely to have a usual source of care than those with back pain or other health problems. Given that the nature of back pain may characteristically be a recurrent, episodic, or long-term chronic condition, individuals may use the services of spine care specialists on an ongoing basis. Health care providers identified as usual source of care should coordinate the delivery of optimal health care, to ensure that patients receive both specialized and primary care services as appropriate to their needs. SMT for COPD Dougherty et al (p. 413) report on the results of spinal manipulative therapy for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who were older than 65 years. They found that no major or moderate adverse events were reported during chiropractic care. Only minor side effects were reported after approximately one third of the intervention sessions, and all side effects resolved within 48 hours.
