The cover illustrations show intraocular retinoblastoma before and after intra-arterial chemotherapy as described by Tuncer et al. in Turkey in the electronic part of this issue of Acta. Professor Niels Ehlers passed away this summer. He was one of the great leaders of Nordic ophthalmology and was, for many years, Editor-in-Chief of Acta. We miss him as we celebrate his life and achievements. Toke Bek and Anders Heijl remind us of his life and career. Koenraads et al. in Utrecht review Sturge–Weber syndrome and visual impairment due to glaucoma and diffuse choroidal haemangioma. Granstam et al. in Sweden demonstrate that severe visual impairment has decreased over the last decade in Sweden, probably due to anti-VEGF treatment for wet AMD. Vottonen and Kankaanpaa in Kuopio found monthly bevacizumab injections to be the most cost-effective treatment for wet AMD and monthly ranibizumab least cost-effective. Munch et al. in Denmark suggest that vitamin A may be a risk factor for early AMD. Mulder et al. in the Netherlands explored the pharmacokinetics of dabigatran in human vitreous humour. Brynskov et al. in Denmark describe retinal thickening following gastric bypass surgery in patients with diabetes. Godefrooij et al. in Utrecht found that cross-linking for keratoconus has led to fewer corneal transplants. Fredriksson and Behndig in Umea recommend eccentric small-zone laser ray tracing for improved refraction in keratoconus eyes. Xeroudaki et al. in Linköping report that a heparin-mimicking regenerative agent improves corneal wound healing in rabbits. Pillunat et al. in Dresden found preoperative IOP to predict effect of selective laser trabeculoplasty. Mendez-Hernandez et al. in Spain report similar diagnostic capacity of haemoglobin imaging as structural imaging of optic nerve in glaucoma. Melin et al. in Sweden examined the variability of neuroretinal rim measurements and find them to be suitable for long-term follow-up of patients with glaucoma. Raffa et al. in Sweden and Saudi Arabia found that preterm children have lower macular volume than controls. Nibourg et al. in Groningen state that adhesion-mediating peptides control lens epithelial cell adhesion in pigs. They suggest that this mechanism may be interrupted to prevent capsular opacification. Tuulonen et al. in Tampere suggest administrative procedures to improve productivity in eye clinics. Hansen et al. in Copenhagen describe maculopathy in a child with tuberous sclerosis. Fadlallah et al. in USA and Lebanon used femtolaser incisions to align toric IOLs. Higham et al. in UK report good 3-year outcome of Ozurdex® for macular oedema in retinal vein occlusion.
