Editorial introductions

Current Opinion in Rheumatology was launched in 1989. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of Rheumatology is divided into 15 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Journal's Editor and Section Editors for this issue. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Gary S. HoffmanGary S. HoffmanDr Gary Hoffman received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and pursued advanced training in Medicine and Rheumatology at the Dartmouth Medical School-Mary Hitchcock Clinic, USA. In being first a clinician, patient experiences steered his research in a many unrelated directions, including calcium oxalate arthropathy in ESRD, inflammatory muscle disease, arachnoiditis and lupus. After 13 years in general rheumatology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, the Army and the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY, USA in 1987, he joined Dr. Anthony Fauci's Vasculitis and Related Diseases Section at the NIH (1987–1992). He became the Head of that Section and has since focused on vasculitis care and research. In 1992 he became the Chairman of the Department of Rheumatic and Immunologic Diseases (1992-2008) at the Cleveland Clinic (CC), where he is the Harold C. Schott Chair. He is the Founder of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Vasculitis Care and Research, Founder and past Chairman of the International Network for the Study of the Systemic Vasculitides (INSSYS) and Professor of Medicine at the CC Lerner College of Medicine. He has led investigations of new therapies for vasculitis and coordinated INSSYS-based multi-center studies of diagnostic laboratory and imaging tools to assess vasculitis disease activity. His major current interest is related to factors that may be involved in determining organ vulnerability and selective targeting. Dr Hoffman has authored over 250 articles and chapters and edited 3 books. Past awards include the NIH Director's Award, the NIAID Director's Award, Wegener's Foundation Award, William Ischmael Award, Pemberton Award, Ira Goldstein Memorial Lecture Award (NYU), Sam and Maria Miller Award for excellence in clinical research, as well as awards for teaching. Dr Hoffman serves on Editorial Boards of numerous rheumatology journals, is the co-editor the textbook Inflammatory Diseases of Blood Vessels. He has recently joined the Board of the Vasculitis Foundation. Previous ACR service includes being a member and Chair of abstract selection committees, member and Chair of The Publications Committee, member of the Nominations Committee and the Board of Directors. He is the 2010 ACR Distinguished Clinical Investigator and a Master of the ACR. SECTION EDITORS Jochen ZwerinaJochen ZwerinaDr Jochen Zwerina is head of the rheumatology unit at the 1st Medical department at the Hanusch Hospital, Vienna, Austria and Lecturer at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He qualified in Internal Medicine at the Medical Universities of Vienna and Erlangen-Nuremberg. His research interest includes on the one hand inflammatory and degenerative rheumatic joint diseases. On the other hand, vasculitis, in particular Churg-Strauss Syndrome (CSS) and large vessel vasculitides are his main research focus. He is involved in collaborative research projects with EUVAS and VCRC. His work has helped to define the clinical phenotype of CSS patients. Moreover, he established disease and activity- specific biomarkers for CSS. Dr. Zwerina is currently member of the Editorial Board of Arthritis & Rheumatism John StoneJohn StoneDr Stone has had a career-long interest in teaching, research, and clinical care of patients with rheumatic diseases. He co-founded and directed the Vasculitis Center at Johns Hopkins University, USA and has directed two major NIH-funded clinical trials in systemic vasculitis. Dr Stone has lectured on his research and clinical interests in the North America, Europe, and Asia. He gave the Sir James Cameron Lecture at the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) in 2003, delivered the Dunlop-Dottridge Lecture at the Canadian Rheumatology Association in 2007, and the Woodbury Lecture at Dalhousie University in 2010. Dr Stone has edited a textbook of his own design entitled A Clinician's Pearls & Myths in Rheumatology. This book is a collaboration of 130 international experts in the rheumatic diseases. As the Director of Clinical Rheumatology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr Stone has organized multi-specialty expertise for the investigation of IgG4-related systemic disease and contributed several original observations pertaining to this disorder. Arezou KhosroshahiArezou KhosroshahiDr Arezou Khosroshahi is an instructor in Medicine in Division of Rheumatology at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), USA. She received her medical degree from Tehran University Medical School in Iran. After finishing a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Transplantation Center at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, she completed her Internal Medicine training at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Columbia University. Upon completion of her clinical Rheumatology fellowship at MGH, she got involved in an exciting clinical research project on a newly recognized condition called IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD). As a Rheumatology Fellow, Dr Khosroshahi made several important observations related to this condition. This includes its contribution to Riedel thyroiditis, its potential for causing thoracic aortitis with aortic dissection and its responsiveness to treatment with rituximab. She co-directed the first international symposium on IgG4-RD with Dr John H Stone which was held in October 2011 in Boston. Their effort in recognition of this emerging condition has led to development of diagnostic criteria and Disease Responder Index for the disease
