Letter from the Editor

In 2007, the positive development of Basic & Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology (BCPT) continued. The number of newly submitted manuscripts reached nearly 500, and only the very best reach publication. Thus, papers published in the journal get cited more and more, and the aggregate impact factor for 2006 was 1788, which is an increase of almost 11% compared to 2005. I wish to thank all the scientists who submitted their work for publication, but also the nearly 1000 reviewers listed in this issue who made an enormous effort in securing that only the very best papers finally reached publication. From 20 May to 24 May, BCPT was the originator and co-sponsor of the ‘International Conference on Foetal Programming and Developmental Toxicity’ that took place in Torshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands. Almost 200 participants and approximately 40 invited speakers attended the conference that was a great success both scientifically and socially. The proceedings in the form of 25 MiniReviews written by the invited speakers will be published in the February issue of BCPT. I wish to thank wholeheartedly the two main organizers, Dr. Pàl Weihe from the Faroe Islands and Professor Philippe Grandjean from the University of Southern Denmark, for their enormous effort in organizing the meeting. Philippe Grandjean did a great job in editing the proceedings. BCPT is the preferred journal of the European Association for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (EACPT). We have had an excellent collaboration with EACPT also in 2007. We published the abstract book of the 8th EACPT Congress taking place from 28 August to 1 September in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and we also published the abstracts of the 9th Annual Congress of Clinical Pharmacology, 1–3 November in Kiel, Germany. BCPT had booths at the Life Sciences in Glasgow, 9–12 July, and at the 8th EACPT Congress. We will have booths at Experimental Biology, 5–9 April 2008, in San Diego; at EPHAR in Manchester, 13–17 July 2008; and at CPT 2008, 27 July to 1 August 2008 in Quebec. We invite readers, authors and reviewers to come and visit us! BCPT will be the official journal of the 16th World Congress on Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, ‘WorldPharma2010’, taking place in 17–23 July 2010 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and the journal will be a major sponsor of the meeting, as well. Wearing my other hat as the president of WorldPharma2010, I am of course very happy for this collaboration that I believe will be of mutual benefit for both the journal and the congress. The year 2007 ranged between a smile and tears. The many good reasons to smile I have listed already, but the tears were due to the death of Professor Ove Svendsen on 12 September. Ove became the chairman of the Executive Committee of the BCPT when I became editor of BCPT in January 2003. We had an excellent collaboration and we shared the same views on the future of the journal. Ove had been seriously ill for 3 years but he continued to care for the journal until a few months before his death. In March, he gave up and was followed by Jørgen Søberg Petersen as the new chairman. I deeply miss Ove. You will find an obituary written by Folke Rasmussen and Jens Schou in this issue. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome two new members of the Executive Committee, Thomas Kongstad Petersen and Helle Northeved. I have also appointed two new MiniReview editors, Professor Lisbeth Ehlert Knudsen from Copenhagen University in Denmark and Professor Eeva Moilanen from Tampere University in Finland. The dramatic increase in the number of new manuscripts led me to appoint two new associate editors, Professor Ulf Simonsen from University of Aarhus and Associate Professor Jens Lykkesfeldt from University of Copenhagen in Denmark. I welcome you all on board! During 2007, Jens Schou, the former Editor, left the Executive Committee. Jens has served the Journal for almost 50 years, and I thank him wholeheartedly for his enormous contribution. During the year, I have had an excellent collaboration with the copy editor and production manager, Mrs Grete Hoppe-Mouret and with the editorial assistants Mrs Tina Ludvig and Mr Henrik Horneberg. I also very much appreciate the work and efforts of Jesper Konradsen, the Associate Journal Publishing Manager of our publisher Wiley-Blackwell. Finally, as always I want to thank our editorial advisors, the members of the Executive Committee, the American Field Editor, William B. Campbell, and the five MiniReview editors for their dedication and work for the journal in 2007. I wish you all a happy New Year!
