ACADEMY NEWS Academy Announces New Student Chapter The Academy is pleased to announce the Board of Directors has approved a new student chapter for Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO). The faculty advisor for this chapter is Eunice Myung, OD, FAAO. Dr. Simonet is in charge of coordinating the Université de Montréal's planning activities and provides support to the Provost and Vice-Rector of Academic Affairs in managing the university system. As a specialist in ophthalmic optics and eye optics, Dr. Simonet has directed nearly two-dozen research projects funded by both public granting agencies (FCAR, CRSNG) and by the ophthalmic industry (Essilor International, Nikon-Optical). He has authored two monographs and authored 56 scientific papers. Winner of the Prix Mérite du Conseil Interprofessionnel du Québec (Merit Award from the Interprofessional Council of Quebec), Dr. Simonet is a member of a number of learned societies, including the American Academy of Optometry, the Société Française d'optique Physiologique and the European Association for Institutional Research. ORGANIZATION & INSTITUTION NEWS NEI Launches David G. Cogan Ophthalmic Pathology Collection The collection, a study and teaching collection of clinical ophthalmic cases and their pathology, is now available worldwide from the NEI Website at http://www.nei.nih.gov. It comprises 1,040 cases and 3,000 slides. The clinical descriptions and photographs were collected by David G. Cogan, MD, during his career as both a clinical and research ophthalmologist. INDUSTRY NEWS B&L to Acquire China's Leading Ophthalmic Pharmaceuticals Company Bausch & Lomb will acquire a 55-percent controlling interest in the Shandong Chia Tai Freda Pharmaceutical Group (CTF), the leading ophthalmic pharmaceutical company in China, from Sino Biopharmaceutical Ltd. The acquisition will accelerate Bausch & Lomb's expansion into the rapidly growing ophthalmic pharmaceuticals market in China. The leader in the China ophthalmic pharmaceuticals market, CTF primarily develops, manufactures, and markets medications used to treat ocular inflammation and infection, glaucoma, and dry eye, including the Moisten and Mioclear lines of eye drops. Bausch & Lomb derived $525 million, or 24 percent of its 2004 revenues, primarily from pharmaceutical products sold mainly in Europe and the United States. Bausch & Lomb, at its plants in China, makes and markets China's leading brands of contact lens and lens care products; the company also sells its products for refractive and cataract surgeries in China. Genentech AMD Studies One-year data from the Phase III MARINA and Phase I/II FOCUS studies of Lucentis (ranibizumab), ongoing two-year studies, in the treatment of wet AMD has been released. In May, Genentech announced that both studies met their primary endpoints of maintaining vision in patients with wet AMD. Both studies reported an improvement in vision (>15 letters) for patients treated with Lucentis. One-year data from the studies were presented during the 23rd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) in Montreal, Canada. SCO Student Wins Varilux Optometry Super Bowl XIV For the third consecutive year, the Southern College of Optometry took home the esteemed crystal Super Bowl trophy and $1,000 prize money. This year's event at the 108th Annual American Optometric Association (AOA) Congress and 35th Annual American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) was held in Dallas, Texas. Students from all nineteen optometry schools in North America, Canada,and Puerto Rico traveled to compete in this annual event which drew over 1,100 people. SCO has Shawn Beilby to thank for bringing home the coveted crystal bowl. The crystal Super Bowl trophy will go to his school where it will be held until next year's event. Second place and $750 went to UC Berkeley's Andrew Wong, and third place and a prize of $500 went to Rakesh Tailor of Inter-American University in Puerto Rico. This year's panel of judges included: Tommy Crooks, OD, John Potter, OD, Lisa Wade, OD, Jim Thimons, OD, and Irv Borish, OD.
