Kaarniranta et al. in Finland and Norway discuss the recent Nobel Prize in medicine, which was given for research on autophagy, and may apply to eye research. Kessel et al. in Denmark conclude that evidence-based guidelines on cataract surgery influence practice patterns. However, reimbursement standards trump clinical guidelines. Brøndsted et al. in Denmark found that blue-blocking IOLs improve sleep efficiency but lower nocturnal melatonin levels compared with neutral IOLs. Cataract surgery improved sleep quality. Malmqvist et al. in Denmark report little change in anatomy or function in adults with optic nerve drusen. Liskova et al. in Czech Republic and UK recommend gene screening in patients with bilateral optic neuropathy. Helin-Toiviainen et al. in Finland found inflammation and oxidative stress in conjunctiva in glaucoma patients and suggest this influences scarring after glaucoma surgery. Jellema et al. in the Netherlands, Canada and USA document improved binocular single vision field and quality of life following strabismus surgery in Graves′ orbitopathy. 30% of patients needed more surgery. Haavisto et al. in Finland review eye injuries in children and recommend supervision and protective eyewear. Ometto et al. in Denmark and UK found that regional distribution of retinopathy lesions may influence recommendation for screening intervals. Smedowski et al. in Poland, Italy and Finland used in vivo confocal microscopy to analyse corneal epithelial cytopathology in infectious keratitis. Sulzbacher et al. in Austria describe OCT angiography patterns in choroidal neovascularization in AMD. Azar et al. in Lebanon, Italy and France describe OCT angiography in pachychoroid neovascularization. Wirth et al. in Switzerland and Germany used OCT angiography to demonstrate persistent choroidal neovascularization. Naderan and Jahanrad in Iran describe keratoconus progression during pregnancy. Borderie et al. in France and USA used full field optical coherence microscopy to evaluate donor cornea in storage. Wozniak et al. in Austria, Poland and Singapore used ultra-high-resolution OCT to observe tear film thickness and how it is affected by instillation of lubricants. Kim et al. in Korea observed and measured tear secretion from lacrimal glands. Pfeiffer et al. in USA found micrometastasis in 20% of cases undergoing sentinel lymph node biopsy for melanoma in conjunctiva or eyelid. Uzun and Pehlivan in Turkey comment on an article on choroidal thickness reduction after trabeculectomy. Cheong and Tan in Singapore comment on an article on choroidal thickness and myopia. Griebsch et al. In Germany show hypoxia-induced signalling in Muller cells. Laban et al. in the Netherlands show identical twins with intracranial and orbital inflammation. Shiraya et al. in Japan found reduced cytokine levels in aqueous humour following ranibizumab injections for DME. Kreps et al. in Belgium and UK describe optic nerve toxicity from linezolid treatment for tuberculosis. Tomkins-Netzer et al. in UK and Israel found aflibercept effective in AMD patients who were non-responders to ranibizumab. Takayama et al. in Japan suggest that OCT angiography may be helpful in Leber′s hereditary optic neuropathy. Mulder et al. in the Netherlands measured the thrombin inhibitor dabigatran in vitreous and subretinal fluid and suggest possible use in ophthalmology. Vesti et al. in Finland report on IOP and eye checks in elderly Finns. Ivastinovic et al. in Austria and Hungary correlate the pattern of pseudophakic CME and vitreomacular interface. Han et al. in London describe Ozone gas-induced eye injury. I hope this issue of Acta provides pleasant summer reading.
