Résumé
For several years now, it has been my habit to spend about 45 enjoyable minutes at noon time every Sunday at the largest bookstore in my city. This has a discount section where I have found many goods books, at very much reduced prices, including hard cover books by Nobel Prize winners in Literature or Pulitzer Prize or Man Booker Prize winners. In this way my voracious reading appetite is satisfied inexpensively with books that I would like to read and own.One such book was by Kazuo Murakami (1), and I acquired it recently rather hastily having become attracted to it by the publisher's blurb and the author's biographical note on the dust cover.Because of my interest in memoirs by distinguished scientists I did not need more information about it.This book is directed at a broad readership and is a translation of one that was originally published in 1997 in Japan, and which, according to the preface, sold over 200,000 copies. It contains biographical information and a description of the author's distinguished scientific career, which included the deciphering of the gene coding for the biosynthesis of renin and the generation by genetic engineering of hypertensive and hypotensive mice.It also contains an exposition of his hypothesis that mental attitude can influence genes by activating or repressing them (this is based on two published experiments on the effect of laughter on the postprandial blood sugar level of a group of individuals affected with type 2 diabetes mellitus and on 23 genes in their peripheral blood leukocytes (2, 3)), which is then extended as a possible explanation of the beneficial effects of a positive life attitude. In fact the subtitle is 'Awaken your genes & discover hidden talents' this being one of the book's major themes. As strongly indicated in the title, the author takes a creationist approach to the origin of the genetic code of life which he attributes to a euphemistically called 'Something Great' which he believes to 'transcend human understanding' (p.xx), to be 'a mysterious force to which we owe our lives'
