Résumé
The minute-book of the Democratic Committee for Poland’s Regeneration was kept in London from March 1846 to May 1847 by George Julian Harney (1817-1897). Harney was the secretary of the Committee as well as a leading Chartist journalist and agitator, the editor of the Northern Star and the founder of the internationalist group The Fraternal Democrats. Harney created the Committee in 1846 with other Chartists and Continental refugees, in the wake of the crushing by the Austrian army of the Polish rising in Cracow, at a time when Poland was a popular cause in Britain. The Committee met monthly in radical premises in Soho. The minute-book is one of the few surviving Chartist artefacts.The article examines both the making of the minute-book, with its handwritten accounts of the meetings and lists of members, and its stuck clippings, mostly articles about the activity of the Committee and the cause of the Polish nation. It studies how this minute-book has reached us, since the Committee folded in May 1847, followed by Harney’s emigration in 1863 and his death in 1897, the preservation of his records by his widow Marie Métivier and her descendants, until the minute-book was purchased by historian David Goodway c. 2000. The article tries to show how this unpublished source substantiates the life of political associations in the mid-nineteenth century.
