It focuses on two elements of the marketing mix:market segmentation andpricing. The highly competitive natural gas markets of North America, strengthened by the deregulation process, the restructuring of electric utility industries, the advance in technological communications, and the global growing concerns on environmental issues, make market segmentation and pricing key elements in setting marketing strategies. The main findings of this research are:the market segmentation is highly dependent on the availability of pipeline distribution and cost of transportation of gas;decisions on market segmentation regarding types of customers are highly dependent on the highest netback that can be obtained;pricing in the natural gas market of North America is highly affected by the availability of distribution pipelines, cost of transportation, period of contract with buyer companies and by the use of alternative energy sources by end-users; andthere is a direct relationship between geographical market segmentation and pricing. The factor that links these two variables is the availability of pipelines to move the gas to the markets.IntroductionThe North American natural gas market has been undergoing profound changes, mainly because of the deregulation process, the restructuring of electric utility industries, the growing concerns on environmental issues, and the advance in technological communications. These changes have encouraged companies to develop sound marketing strategies to compete more efficiently. This paper describes and analyzes marketing strategies followed by Canadian companies focusing on two elements of the marketing mix:market segmentation andpricing.Marketing is a term widely used by academics and practitioners; however, this concept has been misunderstood and misused.1 Although existing literature provides many definitions for marketing, current definitions of marketing include three core themes or "pillars":customer focus, coordinating of marketing activities, andprofitability.2Kotler et al3 define marketing as a social and managerial process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating and exchanging products and values with others. A good understanding of the concept of marketing will help the company to design its marketing strategy. According to Webster,4 the management of marketing plays a critical role in the assessment of market opportunities, including demand analysis and trends, and that the results of this analysis are important when allocating resources across businesses in the company's portfolio. When the assessment of market opportunities is completed, the company has to begin planning the details of the marketing mix.3 Marketing mix is defined by Kotler et al3 as the set of controllable tactical marketing tools that the firm blends to produce the response it wants in the target market.Market segmentation and pricing are two important marketing tools that allow companies to design their marketing strategies. Webster4 says that market segmentation allows the company to target its customers more effectively and efficiently in order to position itself in those segments. He also states that pricing is an important element in the marketing strategy, it interacts with all other elements of the marketing mix to determine the effectiveness of each and of the whole.
