Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. is collaborating with Halliburton to utilize logging while drilling (LWD) techniques to achieve optimal well placement in relatively thin heterogeneous reservoirs of the Clearwater Formation in its commercial cyclic steam stimulation operations in east central Alberta, Canada.Halliburton's StrataSteer3D ® service is used both prior to, and during, drilling in real time to plan, model, and steer the horizontal well. Resistivity, and gamma ray are monitored in real-time to detect the base of the reservoir during horizontal drilling and thereby geo-steer the well one meter above the reservoir base. Real-time data are used to recalculate well plans as new surveys and petrophysical data are acquired. Data collected are integrated using DecisionSpace ® for 3D geological modeling and well planning. Geological surfaces are revised while drilling and are applied to successive wells. Log responses are also characterized and correlated to the known area geology.This method of using the bit to steer by, and refine, the geology results in a reduction in overall drilling time by eliminating the need to intentionally 'tag' the bottom of the reservoir. Wellbore completion is also improved by ensuring maximum steam contact with the reservoir. The precision of vertical wellbore placement is increased thereby giving greater confidence in subsequent reservoir performance characterization.IntroductionTwo years ago, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (CNRL) embarked on a program to maximize the volume of recovered resource while minimizing surface disturbance by drilling sixteen 1200 metre long wells from a single pad in its commercial cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) operations in east central Alberta, Canada. Optimal placement of these long horizontal wells is complicated by largely unpredictable internal heterogeneities and irregular bounding surfaces of the Clearwater Formation reservoir.Accurate wellbore positioning of long horizontal wells within the reservoir has always been challenging; the ellipse of error around the toe of the wellbore can be as great as +/- 7 meters using traditional directional drilling steering technology. This imprecision in areas of thin and geologically variable reservoir results, at the very least, in greater uncertainty in maximizing reservoir capture, and at worst, inability to place the wellbore within the reservoir. Preliminary directional profiles were generated based on picks from the surrounding stratigraphic wells, however due to the geological variations of this surface the base of the reservoir was confirmed by drilling into the underlying shale and the trajectory of the wellbore then adjusted. These 'shale tags' or ghost holes were performed two to three times for each well increasing the overall drilling time and dogleg severity as well as decreasing the length of wellbore used for production.
