However, models to calculate the dimensions of the required plungers have not been presented in previous literature. An analytical model is presented in this work, based on the geometry of the pumps and the properties of the fluids to be handled. This model was validated using experimental data acquired in a reduced scale test bench, where machine oil and air were used as pumped fluids. A good performance of the dynamic model predicting dina-graphic card was observed. It was also found that the static model was useful for determining the application window of any arrangement. At the same time, a poor performance of the flow model through valves was observed due to the simplifications assumed on the model of the process.IntroductionSucker rod pumping is the oldest and most common artificial lift method in the world. Due to its simplicity and robustness, it can be applied to almost any well that needs a lifting system. Nevertheless, there are some physical limits for its practical application, such as depth and flow rate. For conventional sucker rod pumps, the larger the gas void fraction at the pump intake, the larger the pump and surface components required to handle the large volumetric rates and pumping loads. In Venezuela 80 % of heavy oil wells are lifted through sucker rod pumping systems. In most of the cases, reservoir depletion has lead to extremely low downhole pressures, which combined with the low efficiency of downhole gas separation at high viscosity conditions causes an important negative effect on the volumetric efficiency of sucker rod pumps. One of the proposed solutions to improve the performance of the lift system consists on the use of a serial arrangement of two pumps with different capacities. The first higher capacity pump will compress the gas trough out a low pressure increment, then the second pump with lower volumetric capacity will increase the pressure to reach the discharge pressure. This arrangement can increase the flow capacity of the system without a significant load increase, as long as the corespondent pump volumetric capacities are correctly adapted to well conditions.Since no information about mechanistic models or experimental experiences were found in the literature, a formal study to develop a model to simulate and design this kind of systems was conducted.General Description of the systemA brief description of the main components of 2-stage pumps will be presented in this section.
