Résumé
This issue marks the last of our review articles written by presidents and immediate past presidents of the four leading international respiratory societies, namely the American Thoracic Society, the American Academy of Chest Physicians, the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology and the European Respiratory Society. Professor Walter McNicholas MD, FRCPI, FRCPC is Immediate Past President of the European Respiratory Society and Newman Professor in Medicine at University College Dublin, Ireland. He is also Director of the Pulmonary and Sleep Laboratories and Consultant Respiratory Physician at St. Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin. He graduated in medicine (MB, BCh) from University College Dublin in 1974 and was awarded the MD degree by thesis in 1982 on ‘The Pathophysiology of Sleep Apnoea’. Following postgraduate training and research at the University of Toronto (1977–1982), he established the Sleep Laboratory at St. Vincent's Hospital in 1983. His research includes the molecular mechanisms of intermittent hypoxia, the pathophysiology and treatment of sleep apnoea syndrome, and the cardiovascular consequences of the disorder. He is a past Associate Editor of the European Respiratory Journal. He has an extensive publication record in international journals as well as books.
