Résumé
ForeWarning Charles Bowden (bio) walter, okay, i'll try the bio stuff but it's a stretch. it's kind of like hunter thompson's saw about the sixties, if you can remember it, you weren't there. i graduated from tucson high in 1963, did a little less than three years at the UA and got a b.a. (I hated college, wanted out, and because i came from hard times parents, it was essential i get a degree as a reward for all their sacrifices. it is that simple.) i got a woodrow wilson fellowship, elected to go to graduate school at UWmadison (a guy in the history department here shipped me there; i knew nothing about graduate schools and cared less since i never planned to attend or to be an academic). i was at Madison from 66 to 70, the war years as it were. i got a masters in american intellectual history and finished the ph.d. except for the oral defense of the thesis (the department would not hold it because of a spat between faculty members. to be honest, i didn't give a shit since i knew i would not continue teaching.). i did a year of three year contract at university of Illinois, Chicago Circle and then walked out because i was bored. i taught american social history and was all over the map. i destroyed my notes after each quarter in an effort to keep myself honest. i came back to Tucson and worked at odd jobs (trimming trees, mowing lawns) and then bullshitted my way into Arid Lands somewhere in late 73 i think, did two reports (the second one got me fired and was published as Killing the Hidden Waters) and then i was poleaxed by valley fever, the marriage collapsed, the dog died, and after six months of sleep, i took a job at KUAT ramrodding some NEH grants (budget, staff, office, just like a real person. the projects never got produced). it was a waste of time, i got a guggenheim, made it last two years, and hit the road riding a bicycle about six thousand miles a year. in september 1981 i had fifteen bucks and walked into the citizen, faked my credentials, got a job (the star refused to even give me an interview). i planned to work maybe six months, buy a new bike and hit the road. i got hooked by the newsroom and the news business and have never recovered. or wanted to. [End Page 5] after that everything was an accident. i quit the paper i think two or three times and kept coming back. when i finally quit i started the magazine because there was nothing to read around here and the weekly was dedicated to be toothless. the books were therapy, long versions where i could do whatever i wished. i was convinced i was living in a kind of earthquake zone, not the edge of the country, but the center of the future. this notion continues to fuel my life. chuck [End Page 6] Charles Bowden Charles Bowden email to Walt E. Prédiction distillée sur la base complète
