Editorial introductions

Current Opinion in Oncology was launched in 1989. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of psychiatry is divided into 15 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Journal's Editor and Section Editors for this issue. EDITOR Jean A. KlasterskyJean A. KlasterskyJean A. Klastersky was born March 3, 1940, in Prague. Professor Klastersky was Head of the Department of Medicine at the Institut Jules Bordet in Brussels, Belgium, and Professor of Medicine, Medical Oncology and Physical Diagnosis at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1977. He retired from these positions in 2005. Currently, he is the Coordinator of the Programme des Soins Oncologiques for the Public Hospitals in Brussels and Consultant in medical oncology at the Institut Jules Bordet. Professor Klastersky was an intem and resident at the University Hospitals of the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1962 to 1965, where he gained his MD (Docteur en Médecine, Chirurgie et Accouchements). From 1967 to 1968, he was Chief-Resident at Boston City Hospital and then a Research Fellow and Assistant in Medicine at Thorndike Memorial Laboratory Harvard Medical School. He became Chief of the Section of Infectious Diseases at the Institut Jules Bordet in 1970, before taking up the position of Head of the Department of Medicine in 1977. Professor Klastersky was a founder member of the European Lung cancer Working Party and has been his President since 1978 until 2003. He was President (and founder member) of the International EORTC Antimicrobial Therapy Project Group from 1979 to 1987 and the Group's Secretary General from 1987 to 2000. He was President (and a founder member) of the Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) from 1990 to 2000. He has been Visiting Professor of Medical Oncology at the Charles University in Prague, since 1994. Professor Klastersky is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association of Cancer Research, the European Society of Medical Oncology, the American Society of Microbiology, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the “Royale Académie de Médecine” of Belgium and various other international and national medical and/or oncological societies. Professor Klastersky is the author of over 400 original articles, nearly 400 review articles and 17 scientific books. He is the Editor of Current Opinion in Oncology. SECTION EDITORS Julie Ann SosaJulie Ann SosaJulie Ann Sosa, MD MA FACS is Professor of Surgery and Medicine (Oncology) at Duke University, where she serves as Chief of Endocrine Surgery and Director of the Surgical Center for Outcomes Research, as well as Leader of the Endocrine Neoplasia Diseases Group and Co-Leader of the Solid Tumor Therapeutics Program at the Duke Cancer Institute. Her clinical interest is in endocrine surgery with a focus in thyroid cancer. She is an NIH-funded investigator and author of 270 peer-reviewed publications and 50 book chapters, largely focused on outcomes research, health care delivery, hyperparathyroidism, and thyroid cancer, with a focus on clinical trials. Dr Sosa is Treasurer of the American Thyroid Association and serves on the Board of Directors/Executive Council of the ATA, International Thyroid Oncology Group, and Society for Surgical Oncology, as well as practice guidelines committees for the ATA and the NCCN. She is deputy editor of JAMA-Surgery and incoming Editor-in-Chief of World Journal of Surgery. She has mentored more than 50 students, residents, and fellows. Dr Sosa was born in Montreal and raised in upstate New York. She received her AB at Princeton, MA at Oxford, and MD at Johns Hopkins, where she completed the Halsted residency and a fellowship. Pierre HainautPierre HainautProf. Pierre HAINAUT is Professor of Cancer Biology and Chair of Excellence in Translational Research at Université Grenoble Alpes and Director of the Institute for Advanced Biosciences (formerly Institut Albert Bonniot), a multi-thematic research center supported dedicated to Epigenetics, Chronic Diseases and Cancer (18 research groups). His research focuses on TP53 mutations and on biomarkers of transition from chronic diseases to cancer. From 1994 to 2011, he has led the development of the international IARC database of TP53 mutations, a source of information on the causes and consequences of mutations affecting the p53 suppressor protein in cancer. His current research focuses on gain-of-function effects in lung cancer and on biomarkers for early detection of liver and lung cancers, in particular in low-resource countries. Pierre Hainaut is author of over 400 publications and 50 book chapters (h index: 72, Google Scholar). He has co-edited two books on p53 (“25 Years of p53 Research” 2005, 2007, “p53 in the Clinics”, Springer) and a textbook of Molecular Epidemiology (“Molecular Epidemiology: Principle and Practice”, IARC Press, 2011).
