In order to investigate Iranian petroleum reservoirs, one of the Iranian carbonate fields has been analyzed. This field is located in Southern Iran with 23 km long and 7 km wide, and contains two reservoirs,I1 and II2.One of these reservoirs sits over another and an impermeable zone separates two reservoirs. In this field, horizontal and directional drilling have been experienced. Production from this field was started 10 years ago, and it is estimated for naturally depletion 80 years must beconsidered. At the present, out of 28 drilled wells,6 wells are horizontal,7 wells are directional, and 15 wells are vertical.Except one well, all horizontal wells are on stream.Average daily rate of horizontal and directional wells respectively are about 3.1 and 3.5 percent of overall field rate.Nevertheless, in this field and other Iranian carbonate field, there are numerous problems for horizontal wells, such as high losses of drilling mud, troubles in petrophysical logging, need to high cost and time.In this paper, after investigating geological studies, PVT, static pressure, well testing experiments, performance of horizontal, vertical and directional wells and overall performance of this field, the ways for rate increasing have been proposed. As far as possible, wells be drilled vertically(especially in second reservoir, II2) and horizontal drilling be done only in first reservoir,I1.Also, using of artificial lift (such as installation of electrical submersible pumps in wells) is recommended.IntroductionCompensation of the decreasing recoverable reserves can be supported by further development of existing, producing fields in addition to successful exploration.Along with the application of different EOR methods, considerable results can be achieved by horizontal wells. With the application of this technology, the hydrocarbons which seemed to be hidden in unreachable parts of the reservoirs become economically extractable reserves increasing the value of the field. Thus horizontal wells created a revolutionary breakthrough in the world and also in the Iranian hydrocarbon exploitation. The adaptation of the technology has taken under ten years in Iran. The first horizontal well1 was drilled in 1992 but thereafter in 1993, 20 horizontal wells were drilled.By the end of 1999, 68 horizontal wells were drilled in Iranian fields. The aims for the application of this technology in Iranian petroleum reservoirs are:Connection with vertical fractures,Increase in productivity index in sandstone reservoirs,Increase in performance of EOR projects, andIncrease in profit. In this paper in order to investigate the performance of horizontal wells in Iranian petroleum reservoirs, one of the fields has been analyzed.GeologyOil production at this field is from the extensive Cretaceous carbonate reservoirs of the I1 and II2.The field is located in Southern Iran with 23 km long and 7 km wide,Fig.1.The I1 reservoir sits over II2 and an impermeable zone separates them. The thickness of these reservoirs are about 200 m and 700 m, respectively. The I1 reservoir subdivided into three vertically stacked members, of which A1,A2 and A3, and the II2 subdivided into six vertically stacked members, of which B1 to B6,Table 1.Only A2 formation in I1 and B1 formation in II2 have oil column.Reservoir quality is controlled mainly by variations in grain size (primary porosity), bioclast content, the presence of argillaceous material and subsequent exposure to shallow meteoric waters through subaerial emergence, and later burial diagenesis. The contribution of primary interparticle porosity and secondary intra-particle porosity varies in various zones, with effective permeability controlled by pore size and degree of diagenesis. There is no evidence of enhanced reservoir permeability as a result of fracture development in both reservoirs.
