Message from the Editor

The year 2014 has been a highly successful one in the history of both Cerebrovascular Diseases and Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra. The Editors received a steadily increasing number of excellent manuscripts from all around the globe and made a sustained effort to select the best ones based on the specific interests of our readers; this has resulted in about 17% of all submissions being accepted. In mastering this task we received continuous support from the members of the Editorial Board as well as the Ad hoc Reviewers (January 1-October 20, 2014). We appreciate their commitment and expertise. We also thank all those who left the Editorial Board this year and welcome our new colleagues as well as our new associate editors and the Managing Editor operating from the Mannheim Office after the introduction of the new software system for editorial management. Editorial Board members and Ad hoc reviewers have been responsible for all manuscripts submitted and provided detailed comments as well as recommendations for publications, which we communicate to the authors. Decisions about individual acceptance, rejection or recommendation to submit an article to our sister journal Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra have all been made only after additional extensive editorial discussion. This includes in-depth analysis done by our editors as to whether a particular submission would be rated high by our readers and whether it would offer the best chances to be referenced successfully by the scientific stroke research community, given the limitation of space and time provided by the publisher.We appreciate the continuous support and interest shown to our online sister journal Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra, which continues to offer supplementing contributions, especially novel ideas from albeit smaller studies or hypothesis generating reports to be followed by more extensive future investigations. We also encourage the link recently established with other Karger Publisher journals for the publication of Stroke Notes and Case Reports in the online open access Case Reports in Neurology and the ‘still-growing' journal Interventional Neurology. Now that we have been given the assurance that early interventional endovascular therapy may add to a better outcome of acute stroke patients, we hope that Cerebrovascular Diseases and Interventional Neurology may contribute to an extensive discussion about this therapy's utility and benefit for stroke management in addition to the so far one and only approval of iv thrombolysis 20 years ago.The journal acknowledges the continuous support received from the European Stroke Conference (ESC) and vice versa in 2014, when the ESC was attended by about 4,000 people and confirmed its role as a leading stroke conference not only in Europe but worldwide. As the official journal of the ESC, Cerebrovascular Diseases is proud to support future activities. Our mutual efforts have been rewarded by the marked increase in the value of the Impact Factor close to 4 (3.681); subsequently, since last summer, there has been an increase in the number of submissions. This could not have been achieved without the excellent cooperation from the authors, reviewers, editors and staff members at Karger Publishers, Basel.In October 2014, the ScholarOne software system was introduced for the editorial management. After minor teething problems and exchange of experience between the editorial board members, more than one hundred manuscripts were evaluated using this software even in the first two months of its installation. We hope that in due time we will be able to speed up the review process for the benefit of the authors, reviewers and our readers. By using the new system, 90% of reviewers are able to complete their reviews in less than 7 days. This is in accordance with our goal to reduce the turnaround time per manuscript to the greatest possible extent. However, we always make sure that the review process remains meticulous and as good and easy as possible for all of us to keep Cerebrovascular Diseases as an example of a fair, fast and effective way to publish new, interesting and groundbreaking scientific work. Stroke medicine is gaining more importance as people are growing older - and this is the case in many countries around the globe.
