Résumé
As a life-long resident of the Ottawa Valley, it is most appropriate that we honour the memory of Ewan Caldwell for his contributions to forestry in this historical region of Canada.Ewan's ancestor's were among the pioneers who opened up the Ottawa Valley timber trade with harvests of white pine in Lanark County, and river drives down the Clyde, Mississippi and Ottawa Rivers.Several generations later, Ewan himself worked on the timber harvest but also devoted considerable effort to improving forest management and fire protection in the forests of the Ottawa Valley.Following service in the Canadian Army from 1940 to 1945, Major Caldwell pursued a career in forestry.In 1948 he graduated in forestry from the University of New Brunswick and in 1954 from Laval as a forest engineer.His summers as a student were spent working for Gillies Brothers and Company at Braeside, near Arprior, on the Ottawa River, where he eventually assumed a full-time position, becoming Woods Manager in 1960.When he retired in 1983 he was Ottawa Division Woodlands Manager for Consolidated Bathurst.Ewan's active involvement in forestry has included being involved as a founding member of the Ontario Professional Foresters Association, chairman of the Ottawa Valley Section of the Canadian Institute of Forestry, Canadian Pulp and Paper Association and an active participant on many forestry committees over the years.In 1996 he was presented with the Ross Silversides Forestry Award by the Eastern Ontario Model Forest in recognition of his significant contributions to forestry.Perhaps one of his most sigmficant contributions was the role he played in encouraging the Province of Ontario to recognize white pine as a viable species for planting.For several decades foresters had avoided planting white pine because of concerns over weevil and blister rust damage.Ewan convinced every one that this species was too important to ignore and that while there were problems, a planting program was essential.Together with government forester Phil Anslow they
