ACADEMY NEWS Another Academy Giant FallsDr Alden “Norman” Haffner, OD, MPH, PhD, FAAO.We recently learned that long-time leader of Academy and Education passed away peacefully on June 22, 2016 at 87 years old. Dr Alden “Norman” Hafner OD, MPH, PhD, FAAO was a very visible and accomplished Academy Fellow and a ‘larger than life’ figure on the optometry profession scene for many years. Norman was the founding President of the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry in 1971. Current SUNY President David Heath notes, “Dr. Haffner remained president until 1978, by which time enrollment had grown to approximately 230 students. That year he became vice chancellor for research, graduate studies and professional programs at SUNY System Administration in Albany. He served in that role for a decade, returning to SUNY Optometry in 1988 to begin a second stint as president until his retirement in 2005. Dr. Haffner was a major champion of public health throughout his career. He served as president of the Public Health Association of New York City and received its coveted Haven Emerson Award in 1977. He was the founding chair of the city’s Community Family Planning Council, an organization that works to provide access to quality health care services for low-income and uninsured New Yorkers. He also served as chair of the American Academy of Optometry’s Section on Public Health and Environmental Optometry from its inception for more than two decades. Dr. Haffner was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the Subcommittee Medical Advisory Group in the Department of Veterans Affairs in 1987. The American Academy of Optometry recognized his contributions to public health by naming him the inaugural recipient of the Henry B. Peters Memorial Award in Public Health and Environmental Vision in 2014. He was also president of the prestigious Hermann Biggs Society. Dr. Haffner had nearly 200 scholarly publications during his career, mostly in the fields of public health, health care policy and optometric education. Dr. Haffner was also credited with helping to lead a profound shift in the way that optometry was practiced beginning in the late 1960s, aiding the transformation that the profession made from non-therapeutic practice toward a more broad, “medical model” that was better suited to the training that optometrists received as well as the public health needs of the community.” Norman Hafner’s legacy will live on for many generations. Maintenance of FellowshipThe Maintenance of Fellowship (MOF) bylaws amendment states that any Fellow inducted on or after November 2010 must meet the MOF requirements every 10 years to maintain Fellowship in the Academy. This initiative was designed to ensure and show that all Fellows remain dedicated to professional growth. To participate in the MOF program, you need to obtain 15 points during each 10-year period. Points can be earned in a variety of ways including attending the Academy’s annual meeting (3 points), attending CE at the Academy’s meeting (1 point/2 hours of CE), or authoring an article in one of the peer-reviewed journals approved by the Academy (up to 4 points). Student and Resident Academy Travel Fellowships Available for AnaheimThe Academy offered a limited number of $750 student travel fellowships to assist students who are accepted as paper/poster presenters with travel expenses to attend Academy 2016 Anaheim. The application window will be open until August 1, 2016. Just a couple of days left to apply. Student travel fellowships are funded through generous grants from Johnson & Johnson, Essilor, the Scleral Lens Society, Beta Sigma Kappa, the American Academy of Optometry, the New Jersey Academy Chapter, and the Florida Academy Chapter. Academy’s AOF Announces 2016–2017 FellowsOn June 3, 2016, the American Optometric Foundation (AOF) announced the nine recipients for the 2016 William C. Ezell Fellowship program. The Ezell Fellowship program is named after the founding President of the AOF, William C. Ezell, OD. It was established to provide talented postdoctoral students, who are pursuing an advanced degree in optometric research and education, recognition, and support. To date, over 300 William C. Ezell Fellowships have been awarded since the inception of the program in 1949. Funding for these Fellowships is provided by leading optometric companies, private endowments, and other generous business organizations that represent most sectors of the industry. Agência Brasil.An NEI press release (May 19, 2016) draws attention to the expected increase in low vision and blindness by the year 2050. The release notes, “With the youngest of the baby boomers hitting 65 by 2029, the number of people with visual impairment or blindness in the United States is expected to double to more than 8 million by 2050, according to projections based on the most recent census data and from studies funded by the National Eye Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health. Another 16.4 million Americans are expected to have difficulty seeing due to correctable refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness) that can be fixed with glasses, contacts or surgery. The researchers were led by Rohit Varma, M.D., director of the University of Southern California’s Roski Eye Institute, Los Angeles, and published their analysis May 19th in JAMA Ophthalmology. They estimate that 1 million Americans were legally blind (20/200 vision or worse) in 2015. Having 20/200 vision means that for clear vision, you would have to be 20 feet or closer to an object that a person with normal vision could see from 200 feet away. Meanwhile, 3.2 million Americans had visual impairment in 2015—meaning they had 20/40 or worse vision with best possible correction. Another 8.2 million had vision problems due to uncorrected refractive error. ‘These findings are an important forewarning of the magnitude of vision loss to come. They suggest that there is a huge opportunity for screening efforts to identify people with correctable vision problems and early signs of eye diseases. Early detection and intervention—possibly as simple as prescribing corrective lenses—could go a long way toward preventing a significant proportion of avoidable vision loss,’ said NEI Director Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D. Over the next 35 years, Varma and his colleagues project that the number of people with legal blindness will increase by 21 percent each decade to 2 million by 2050. Likewise, best-corrected visual impairment will grow by 25 percent each decade, doubling to 6.95 million. The greatest burden of visual impairment and blindness will affect those 80 years or older as advanced age is a key risk factor for diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and cataract. The researchers analyzed data on visual impairment and blindness from six large studies: the Beaver Dam Eye Study (Beaver Dam, Wisconsin), Baltimore Eye Survey and Salisbury Eye Evaluation Study (Maryland), the Chinese American Eye Study (Monterey Park, California), Los Angeles Latino Eye Study, and Proyecto VER (Nogales and Tucson, Arizona). They used the 2014 census and population growth projections to estimate the nationwide prevalence of vision impairment and blindness now and in 2050. In terms of absolute numbers, non-Hispanic whites, particularly white women, represent the largest proportion of people affected by visual impairment and blindness, and their numbers will nearly double. By 2050, 2.15 million non-Hispanic white women are expected to be visually impaired and 610,000 will be blind. ‘Based on these data, there is a need for increased screening and interventions across all population, and especially among non-Hispanic white women,’ Varma said. African Americans currently account for the second highest proportion of visual impairment, but that is expected to shift to Hispanics around 2040, as the Hispanic population—and particularly the number of older Hispanics—continues to grow. Hispanics have particularly high rates of diabetes, which is associated with diabetic eye disease, a treatable cause of visual impairment.
