Consistency Between Documented Occupational Therapy Services and Billing in a Skilled Nursing Facility: A Pilot Study

AbstractHistorically, reimbursement policies have shaped the delivery of therapy services. The purpose of the current study was to address a limitation in the data collection of a previous pilot study, which assumed billing sheets to be representative of actual therapy activities. Billing sheets were systematically selected (n = 35) from a skilled nursing facility and compared to corresponding weekly progress notes (n = 98) to determine the percent agreement between the two. The average percent agreement across the billing sheets and progress notes was 87.9 percent. Using percent agreement calculations, this study demonstrated that billing sheets are representative of occupational therapy intervention as documented in weekly progress notes.KEYWORDS: Prospective payment systemskilled nursing facilitydocumentation Additional informationNotes on contributorsDavid GreeneJennifer R.
