The essays, each of which comes with its own bibliography, are arranged under the two headings featured in the main title of the volume. I. Observations on Processes of Transformation in Ancient Near Eastern Societies" (2009); and "The Reduction of Complexity: The Theological Profile of a Deity and Its Iconographic Expression. The essays are preceded by a dedication to B.'s husband and the couple's cats (Für meinen Mann und unsere Katzen) and a Preface with remarks by B. on her project in the volume.
