Résumé
Even more so than Avalon, Slows Bar-B-Q has been celebrated by journalists as being central to the city's recent revival. However, while Slows (and Phil Cooley) have received much praise, they have also been criticized as leading to the gentrification of Corktown and pricing others out of the neighborhood. Cooley also owns the nearby restaurant Gold Cash Gold and Slows has expanded to multiple locations, including in Midtown and in Grand Rapids. One of his newest ventures is Ponyride, which provides space for entrepreneurs to accelerate and incubate their ideas, in what Cooley describes as a safe and supportive environment where people are not afraid to try new things, or even to fail. The Ponyride location was a tax-foreclosed building; Cooley purchased it to try to change the narrative of tax foreclosure and as “a study to see how the foreclosure crisis can have a positive impact on the community.” Phil grew up an hour north of Detroit. After graduating college, he spent time working as a model and lived in various cities around the world. He returned to Michigan and settled in Detroit a few years before opening Slows. In addition to this work, he sits on the advisory board of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Southeast Michigan and is an adjunct professor at Lawrence Tech. I moved here because of hip hop, techno music, the garage rock scene, Tyree Guyton. I loved the Talking Heads and Suicide and lot of things that came out of the 1970s in New York City. I was reading and thinking about some of the thought process of Peter Schjeldahl, New York Times art critic, at that time. His idea was to move to a city, go to the bars, meet like-minded people, and start a movement. I lived in all these major cities and they were great and beautiful, but expensive. And I never felt I was part of the community, so I came here looking for New York's SoHo of the 1970s. And I found that. I found some of the most creative and talented people. I found citizens here that worked together because they had to, and that was important to me.
